Got a distributor P/N 1112001. What does it fit. Was told it is for a Corvette but does not have a tach drive.

Re: Need Part Identification
In addition to what John mentioned, the GM #1112001 distributor is an ALUMINUM housing distributor. Although non-tach drive distributors were used on most pre-1962 Corvettes, NO Corvette with points type or TI distributors EVER used an aluminum housing distributor. The first use of an aluminum housing distributor on a Corvette was the HEI distributor first used for the 1975 model year. These distributors are configured MUCH differently than any points-type unit.
So, if you find any ALUMINUM housing, points or TI type distributor, you can be CERTAIN it was never used on a Corvette no matter what part number it is. If somebody tells you such a distributor was used on a Corvette, you can tell them they're nuts and feel confident about it.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Need Part Identification
Joe;
I like your enthusiasm about this subject. Is there more to it, i.e. is there something bad about the aluminum housing units? Reason I ask is that I have one on my parts shelf that I was planning to configure as a backup to the tach drive distributor in my 63. I also have an older 57 steel housing unit (w/oiling tube on the side) that I may use for the same purpose. Trouble is, I only have one more Ball Bearing plate to use in a back up. I have to choose, then set it up with a Petronix II pickup (of which I only have one of also). A lot will depend on their internal condition when I pull the shafts, etc. I currently have the aluminum unit set up with an adjustable rotor kit and large diameter Ford cap which I have never tried or used as it won't work well in my Vette. It was from my Hot Rodding era

There is nothing functionally or fundamentally inferior about the aluminum distributor housings. It's just that they were never used on any pre-1975 Corvette.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Need Part Identification
Joe;
Thank you for that Information. Just wanted to be certain, as all too often lately it seems i'm living in fog like everyone knows something but me! Guess I'll use my aluminum unit then as it is even light enough to pack away on a trip, if need be.
Thanks again;
