    245/270 hp carb setups

I am looking for information on what exactly to look for when purchasing 2x4 setups for my 59 to insure that I am buying ncrs correct carbs?

You copy of the Judging Guide book recites the indivual casting numbers of the main components of the carb. Get those and any of the recognized carb restoration services can take it from there!

Also note I believe there are some differences between 245 and 270HP carbs. Make sure you know what you need.

the jetting is different and i have found the 270 HP engines work better with the 245 HP jetting for every day driving. i think the 270 HP set up is for racing with open exhausts.

I'm no expert on this but what I was thinking of is the four fuel dump tubes in the venturis in the main bodies are cut vertically (parallel to the venturi centerline) in the 2626 & 2627 245HP carbs and at an angle in the 2613 and 2614 270HP carbs. There may be other differences, but this would be visible if you're really trying for originality.

the counterweight arms on the 270 hp are longer that the arms on the 245 carbs.mike

Interesting... Has anybody else experienced this?
Clem, are you referring to both the jets and metering rods?

From the Corvette Engine Tune-Up T-O-P 57-37-S&M Manual giving part numbers for jets for the 56 dual quads (lower left frame). There is probably a similar publication with recommendations for the 58-61 carbs if it's not in the ST-12.

But, if you start with the correct main casting numbers and have one compenent in the field of restoring Carter carbs take it from there, the details of counterweight geometry, internal jetting, Etc. will be resolved by the restoration service... Now, if you want to do it all yourself, that's another story.

                      Re: 245/270 hp carb setups

some basic starters for you.The tops of the carbs should have 1299 cast into it and the center sections should have 049 cast into them. The differences between the 270hp and the 245hp carbs are as mentioned before the weights and the venturis.Correct carbs are getting much harder to find and very pricey.Once they are rebuilt correctly they run very well.I have a customers '56 that has a correct set on it.He is looking for the correct '56 setup and will sell the ones on the car now.

Do either 56 set have the side Idle air screws? i.e. adjust idle speed with air bleeds instead of throttle being cracked open. Only ones I ever worked on like that were on early 56 Vette's and Caddy El Dorados.

I believe all '56 into about Oct '56 of the '57 model year had the secondary idle air screws.

Also conceder the Corvette Carb BASE , it's thinner then a car 2x4 base so the air cleaner don't hit the hood. 55-56 Chrysler's ? Also had dual Carbs using no choke on the front Carb selling as Corvette. But other know much more then me and what I think I know!!

another thing to look for on the tops is the 1161 stamped on the front carb and 1296 on the rear. it is usually very faint.

be careful on the bases because some of the less reputable rebuilders will give you correct tops and bodies and sneak on the incorrect bases with the wrong venturis because the number can't be seen when carbs are assembled and the correct bases are rare. also 0-1049 is accepted by ncrs on the main bodies but i think the 0-049 is more original.

these set-ups are very expensive and often cloned so make sure you get a good source from someone on this board. they will probably cost you around $4k or more for a good set-up with manifold.
