The top L78 seal introduction was noted in the tech service bulletins effective at a specific VIN #. I can dig it out if any are interested.

    Hello Wayne,

I'd like to know what the specific VIN was for the change. The car that I am restoring is VIN 22161.

    Thanks,

    James West
    Omaha, NE.

James -- much earlier than yours; incorporated in production starting with VIN # 16736, according to attached thumbnail. (first few days of May 1965).

Thanks for the info Wayne. Now I know why I didn't remember the seal on my old 14,971 car.

I have a 396 Duntov car and had the same question when I restored my car for judging.

What I found was that the seal was NOT installed on production cars. It is shown in the assemby manual and I tried to install one on my original shroud and the rubber seal would interfear with the fan.

I had the car judged at 3 National meets and did not receive any deductions.

          Tony,

I had the same experience as Greg. Installed the lower seal per the assembly manual and it interfered with the fan, so I took it off.

Here is a pic of a repro, I have not installed it because we have S/N 15055 and as Wayne's info shows they did not start until later production.

The repro has three ribs on one side none on the other, would the ribs face forward?
