    Brake Fluid on Carpet

My master cylinder leaked and the fluid leaked into my drivers side carpet. Master cylinder problem has been fixed. I have been wiping down the carpet with paper towel to get the fluid off but it doesn't get it all off. I will keep wiping but does anyone have any suggestions to dry out the carpet?

It will NEVER clean! Go ahead and order new carpet. You'll need to make sure the floor is as clean as possible before installing the new or it wil soak it up.

I've used Ivory dish washing detergent,(straight and diluted), to get some really black grease off of my red carpet, worked great. It's not perfect but tough to see any marks unless you are looking for them. If you are going to trash the rugs, might give the soap a try after you've gotten as much of the fluid up using the towel method..

What color is the carpet? Try super clean and a shop vac.

If it's glycol fluid, I'd flood it with water and vacuum dry. If it's silicone...

Well don't stop there, and leave everybody hanging! What about silicone?

I've got to clean up some silicone brake fluid. What is a solvent for that?

I'm hanging too...I don't know of a solvent for it. I had a terrible time trying to paint over a surface with silicone on it. (That was 30 years ago. Maybe there is something available today.) Good luck, and post it if ya find it.

Hi Christopher. I missed the connection. Aren't you glad you weren't using glycol?

Try a product called Krud Kutter. You can find it at Home Depot. It's great on most all stains.

I will give this a try. What do I have to loose if my other option is to replace the carpet.

It is glycol. I will try this also.

                    Thanks for the suggestion.

                          Hi Bill:

Just for fun, I tried to get a picture of my C1 master cylinder from the driver's footwell. (It took many tries to get a good shot.) What you're looking at is the brake pedal hooked to the master cylinder. The rubber boot is the back of the master cylinder. You can see that my master cylinder would (and is) leaking into the driver footwell. (Because the C1 had no provision for a power booster, the master is set back much further than in a C2.)
