After having the battery go dead a couple of times, I finally had the generator rebuilt. Installed and cleaned all of the wire connections. Took out the VR, opened up the case, cleaned up the points with light sand paper, cleaned the terminals, found one loose wire connection. Put back together, polarized the VR. Now the amp gauge is a little on the (+) side at idle and about 30+ going down the road. I don't think this is too high. At idle just a little to the (+). Also found a broken wire on the horn relay and now fixed. Need to get under the dash one of the days and get the dash lights working.

Does the needle ever come down after driving a while? Does the needle go to the minus side at an idle with the lights on? What rpm are you idleing at? Generators are not like alternators they don't normally charge at an idle, at least mine never have.

Ok, not a tech response, but could not resist... What a great visual, driving a '62 Vette back from Dairy Queen on a nice night. Can't wait to take the '55 to my favorite local drive-in burger joint...- Top
