    Found 1967 435 engine

I pulled my brother's 1970 from 30 years of storage and found a 1967 435hp engine in it. The car was an orginal small block. The vin is stamped on the pad. How would I go about researching to see if the car still exists?

Unfortunately, there's no comprehensive and practical way to do it.

      Is there a common registry?

If you are referring to a non-governmental, privately operated "registry", it's possible. These days, it seems like there is such a "registry" for almost everything. Given the year's popularity, I suppose there's one for 1967's, but I don't have contact information. I'm sure others on this board will, though, if such a registry exists.

However, as with any of these registries, the only vehicles included will be those the owner has elected to include. They often won't be up-dated if a car's ownership changes. Nevertheless, if the car is on the registry, one might be able to contact the present owner through a previous owner.

          Kevin, The C2 Registry....

          http://www.c2registry.org

lists only 179 67's registered. That's .78%. Check it out, you never know. Your other option is to place a Driveline ad in the "Information Wanted" & the For Sale sections listing it. (you really don't have to sell it). I think the hit rate is pretty low though as Joe opinioned.

...However, here's an interesting related story. I bought my '59 in 1986. It had, and still has, a Oct built 283 from a 61 Corvette, 270hp, dual fours (CU suffix on the pad). In 1995 I was getting some piston slap, then deciding to pull the engine for rebuild. When I did, I thought....hmmmmm, should I look for a Feb 519 block and make it more matching to the March built car, and try to find the car that my 61 block belongs to? I decided, naaa, I'll just rebuild this one. Right after I pulled the engine.......very, very ironically, I was reading my new issue of the March/April 1995 Driveline.

There it was! A 1961 was for sale. Driveline requires for sale car ads to list the vin#. Bingo, my 61 engine vin derivative MATCHED the car for sale. Hmmmm, ad stated "1961 Corvette vin ##xxxxxx, matching number 283". Wow, how could that be....I have that engine in my 59? Called the guy and asked him about the car. He said, yup, matching numbers. I said nope, can't be. He said uh, oh...why. I said the original engine to that car is in my 59. A pause.....then he said, oh sh_t! I looked for that for 8 years. Gave up and did a restamp.

My point here is, you never know who's looking for a 67 435hp engine for their car. The car may exist. May not. It was 11 years before I found the '61 car my engine belonged to. Unfortunately, in my case the car already had it's "original" engine under the hood.

          Rich
p.s. I had my 59 judged at the Florida Regional here and the Mech judges said, Wow Rich, that engine pad with it's gorgeous original broach marks....too bad this car isn't the 61!!! I said yea, I know, and grinned ear to ear. BTW, I got a 84.1 score, 3rd flighted, with a NOM!

            Thanks for the reply.

I do not have any plans to sell the engine. I will start the search and see if the car still exists. My guess, the car was wrecked and the engine removed. Consequently, this could turn out to be one of those great stories like yours.

I will check the c2 registry and post the vin# as you suggested.

You could place an ad in the driveline stating that you have the original engine for vin#----.

You might want to think hard about your search those high performance engines were stolen out of cars quite often. If so your search might end up with you losing the engine as it could be stolen property.

                Anthony,

                Thanks for the heads up.

If the engine/car is stolen some insurance company owns it at this time. Two scenario's could develope: Buy it back from the insurance company or return it to its righful owner.

I would hate to loose the engine but if the car exists and it was indeed stolen than it needs to be returned.

I would much rather purchase the car for myself.

Kevin my bother has a 1967 Corvette 327/350 engine. This engine is in a 55 Chevy that he bought after getting out of the Army in 1971. Still has the 55 and engine. Have always wondered if the 67 Corvette the engine was in originally is still on the road.

Could a Police Officer run just the VIN on the pad 194677Sxxxxxx or does it need to be more specific like a state or body style etc ?. if it was stolen back in the day would any insurance interest be long since passed ?

i had a friend who was in the NYPD auto crimes squad and i remember him telling me years ago that LEGALLY if he runs a # and finds it stolen the item ( car, engine, tranny) must be seized.
