Nylon vs Brass Button? Distributor Cross Gear

I have a 1972 coupe with 350/200. I need to replace the nylon button that serves as the thrust bearing surface for the tach drive gear (or cross gear) inside my distributor. I think they started putting these in distributors in '71 to protect the housing. Most parts places stock a brass button as a service replacement for the original nylon button. You can still get the ny lon button also. Anyone had experience with installing the brass button as a replacement? Recommendations?

Second the nylon button for the later distributors fitted to use it. The brass button is primarily a repair item for cases where the housing has been eaten by the gear in the applications prior to use of the nylon button.

The nylon button will last longer than you will. Unfortunately, the button, GM #1957329, is long-since GM-discontinued, and I don't know of a source for it. There may be one, though.

Fellas....I found the nylon button and bought one from Bair's. Check out item #1952 (4th item from the bottom of the page)

Thanks for the source, I just ordered one too. I think with the brass button, you have to pull the distributor shaft to install it. With the last nylon button I didn't have to.

But they do wear out faster than the brass button.

Jerry, You're welcome. Yes I called Bairs this morning and they said that someone else just ordered one also. Yep, they didn't charge me any shipping so $2 got me the new nylon button. Hope it works.

Unbelievable! I received the nylon button from Bairs tucked into the center of one of their catalogs. Cost $2.00 plus 75 cents frieght, $2.75 total.

I know where my next big order is going.

Hey Jerry. Yea I got mine yesterday the same way. Pretty cheap. I spoke to them on the phone earlier this week and they seem real friendly. I will probably order from them again. They were the only parts place I found that carried the nylon button (although I did not look much further after I found this one since it was only 2 bucks). Anyone else had any experience with Bair's?
