    Fitting repop 69 door sills

How do you guys go about fitting the current repop 69 door sills? I went to do a trial fit on mine and I see that the holes are about 1/16" too far one way and the only way to make them fit is to drill new holes in the bird cage or trim about an 1/8" off of the end of the sills.

The other problem I see is that there is no counter sink for the screws so they stick up like something "Bubba" would do and look like crap! I guess they couldn't put a proper counter sink in for the screws because the aluminum is literaly half the thickness of the original sill.

Any ideas on how to make these look and fit properly?

I had the same issue. I reinstalled the scratched originals because I couldn't tolerate either a) drilling holes or b) having screws stick up too high. If there is a source that makes "more correct" sill plates I'd like to know.

There is a better reproduction out there that has the countersunk holes. I do not know who is selling them though

I don't know the correctness but I have seen Keen Parts suppling other vendors.

          Dickie, I think you're right.

I ordered my repros many years ago, and when I compared them to the originals, I couldn't tell the difference. I'm pretty sure I would have noted the screw holes not being countersunk. I believe I ordered mine from Willcox...that doesn't mean that they still have the same supplier, but it may be worth a call.

Patrick/Greg, if you still have the originals, restoration may also now be a viable option with more than one vendor restoring rocker moldings...at least I think that is the case now. The anodizing would have been the problem before...it might be worth making an inquiry of the rocker panel restorers.

            Greg,
I don't want to stir too much up, but I found #10 oval head screws with # 8 heads. They nestle down in the counter-sunk area very nicely.
            Regards,
            Alan

PS: I'm not positive about the #, but the head is 1 size smaller than what the shank would normally have. I found them at Carlisle.

The #10 with the #8 head is the correct screw for the plates.

                Reduced Head Screws

Recently learned that these puppies are known as "Jackson head" in the fastener industry. Was researching trim screws and stumbled on this useful factoid.

Re: Fitting repop 69 door sills

I have the correct screws from Doc Rebuild and they fit perfect in my original sills so I'm okay there.

My problem is going to be trying to make the repop sills fit or finding good repops that do fit. If all else fails I guess I'll just reuse my old ones.

Does anyone know if anyone carries proper repop door sills?

Because I've done it myself........make sure the sills are not turned around. They can be positioned backwards and redrilled. I always look at the contour of the kick panel and match it to the sill plate on one side.

                      Greg,
I carried my old sill trim plates to Carlisle to use as reference. I looked at a bunch of sills for hole location and cosmetic appearance and settled on 2 that required me to drill 1 new hole on each side of the car's sills. I called it done because the heat had fried what little brain I still have and my restoration had already taken 10 years too long.
                      Regards,
                      Alan

PS: The trim plates are off now because I'm trying to figure out how to make the kickpanels fit into the end of the trim plates better. I must be very wicked because I get no rest.
