hot positive battery cable

I pulled my car into the drive today and shut it off. Went back about 10 minutes later to take it back out. Turned over real slow then acted like the battery was dead.(starter clicking) Opened the battery compartment to check connections and almost burned my fingers it was so hot. Any ideas why this happpend? I have 2 thoughts..!st....to much voltage pull from the starter
2nd..I have those felt things that are suppose to stop corrosion and noticed that the positive cable side the felt was between the battery and the cable.Maybe not making good enough connection...What do you think..Thanks

is the cable pure copper or copper plated aluminum??? you can tell by the weight different as tha aluminum cable will be lighter in weight than pure copper
