    68 outer door wipe......

    Hi, been a while....

Has anyone ever seen an assembly manual drawing or part number that showed the outer window fuzzy and wipe as one part number or as two seperate part numbers?? Also, was there more than one part number used for the 68 outer window wipes??

    Thanks, Terry

Terry on 10-3-1981 I replaced the right and left outer window seal/wipes in my 1968. The part numbers I recorded are #3937267 $12.10 and #3937268 $9.08. I can't tell you why there was a price difference between the left and right pieces.

As far as the OUTER window is concerned, there is only the MOULDING and the SEAL. These were never sold as an assembly but only as separate pieces. The last available SEALS were GM #3937267, left, and GM #3937268, right. These were discontinued without supercession in January, 1994 and August, 1987, respectively.

Were there other part numbers for these seals? Yes, there were EARLIER part numbers. Originally, the part numbers for the SEALS were GM #3919779 and GM #3919780. These were superceded by the above-referenced in May, 1968. How were these different from the above-referenced? I believe that length was the primary difference.

Curiously, there was another set of outer seals, GM #3945289, left side, and GM #3945290, right side. These were discontinued in November, 1968 by the 3937267 and 3937268, respectively. How do these differ from both of the above-referenced and how do these figure into things? I don't know. My "head is spinning" on this one.

        Jim,
Were the outer wipes that you purchased at Chevrolet a fuzzy by itself or was it a fuzzy and a wipe attached to it?

          Joe,

Thanks for the responce. You know, the seems to me that there should be more known about the appearance of the rubber wipe feature to the outer window wipe. I am fairly certain most 68 corvette just had the fuzzy. I sort of suspect the rubber wipe appeared only briefly before 69 production started and then they went to the rubber wipe with felt. I sometimes suspect it was something that was attached at the dealer. Hmmm. I believe there were issues with the lock mechanism freezing and complaints related to that. I suspect the rubber wipe appeared in regards to that complaint and then later they even added a rubber dam to glue around the lock mechanism. I saw an original dealer install kit to install around the lock that was dated in 1968. Sort of a weird thing and I have never seen anything like it though similar to the ones that appeared in later corvette production. Terry

Terry the units I installed in 1981 are all fuzzy. Just checked them on the 68 in the garage. I would have to look through a lot of invoices to find the actual date I bought them. I literally took all of my 68's removable pieces off to repaint it to get paint new paint on a bare body. I replaced the exterior door handles with new ones from GM. The new ones even with their limited handling since installed also in 1981 have not held up showing chrome wear where they are grasped to open the door. I still have the original ones to compare the wear on the replacement door handles.
