Has anybody had any luck with getting info from the North Carolina DMV?
They advised me to use form MVR-650A after I sent an email inquiring about my cars 2003 inspection sticker. The only thing is, I can only get the info if I fall under some of the exceptions listed on the form. As a individual just looking for owner history, I don't think I qualify for any of the exceptions.

We used to be the best, but things have changed with the new federal privacy laws. I think you should fill out the form and try it.

I second Wayne's answer. Several years ago I did a title search on a '28 Buick and '29 Ford. Got complete owner's history back to day one! But it turned out that they were one owner vehicles.

About 20 years ago I did a title search on my first Vette, a '61 that I got in '62. The search took me back to the original owner, myself, a dealer in Eastern NC, and finally to Florida. When I contacted FL I hit a dead end. It "sorta" got searched thru NICB, (or whatever the name is/was) the forerunner to NATB, but never showed up.

Fill out the form. I believe there is a box you check that this is for research purposes only and you will not contact previous owners. I traced my 1960 from North Carolina several years ago and received all of the documents back to the selling dealer and the delivery information from GM. Good luck.

No luck. NC DMV informed me that:
We have searched our records, and NCDMV no longer has any registration information or title history on Vin 1Z37L2S519882 here in the state of North Carolina.

Thats a bit hard to believe, if its been registered in NC in the last 20 years. I got information on my 33 Cadillac and it hadnt been registered since the 50s. But, It took some prodding and more than one search. So make sure that your numbers are correct and try again. Hope you get a good researcher. After a time the records are sent to Archives and History. I am trying that search now on the 33 in hopes of getting it back to the 30s, but I am not holding my breath.

I am going to give the NC-DMV a try. Is this form 650A
or 605A?? Are you all requesting a Certified Complete History?

The form is MVR-605A.
I REQUEST CERTIFIED COPY OF COMPLETE TITLE HISTORY

I sent in the form, a copy of the title, a letter about my reasons to document previous owner history and a check for $11.00 to cover the fees.

In the letter I stated that the car still has a 2003 North Carolina inspection sticker on the windshield.

They returned everything I sent them along with the letter signed by Don Ferrier. He is the official custodian of the records.

Would you get anywhere doing a CarFax? If it was inspected than it would be reported in databases. It should give you some history. JB

I tried a Carfax type co.(can't remember the name);but the 1963 vin# was not able to be found. We can all thank the new privacy laws for this!

Carfax only deals with the later 17-digit VIN numbers.
