Joe, I have seen at least four variations of this base and am sure that there are more. One tube, two tubes, three tubes, tube turned at different angle.....The weird looking one has three tubes, looks like some creature from outter space

The center-hung float adjuster nuts are somewhat taller than the side-hung adjusters. They are also on-center of the bowl, whereas, the side hung are slightly off-center. I'm not sure, either, whether a 1966-67 SBC/L36 style base will fit on a L72/LT1/Z28 carburetor. It is possible, though.
Reason I brought it up is that somebody posted elsewhere that my (L76) air cleaner base would not fit on a dual feed Holley because of the throttle linkage, AND, the float adjusters.

Yes, I don't doubt that an L-76 air cleaner won't with a Holley with center hung floats. However, what I've been saying is that any original OPEN ELEMENT air cleaner, whether or not it was originally used with a center float Holley, should work with a center float Holley.

I totally agree. The vent tubes are the primary difference between open element air cleaner bases. There are a few other minor differences, too, but the vent tube differences are the most obvious of them. With respect to configuration supporting center hung float Holley carbs or side hung float Holley carbs, they are the same, though.

Well, that helps a great deal.
          Ideal situation:

Buy a base only, from a 1966-67 SBC air cleaner, and use the cover from my L76.
Swap linkage arm and rod with 1966/67 SBC parts.
Hood clearance is the issue, and, diameter/height of the filter elements.

I don't think the lid of the L-76 air cleaner will work properly with the 66 and later base. It's possible, I suppose, but I doubt it.

Worth a try at (about) 70 bucks!
