    Personalized licence plate-- Follow Up

    Hi all,

Thanks to all who offered some great idea's for my rear licence plate. Seeing as this will done on a 1964 North Carolina tag I can put what I want to on it without the worry someone else already has it. I plan to run the tag on my car and still keep my current NC tag in the glove box for DMV purposes. Here are narrowed down choices. Tell me what you think.

    1. LUV2FLY
    2. NEWN 64
    3. ITSA6T4
    4. MIDYEAR
    5. STNG RY
    6. STNGRAY
    7. C2 1964
    8. CW 1964

Craig, if you get stopped with that tag, you will be charged with failure to display proper license tag. You can run an older NC tag as long as you have a current plate in the dash, but you cannot use a novelty license plate.

OK I read the pages and pages of suggestions, I want to vomit. Go with year of manufacture if you can. In MHO a vintage car only looks good with plates that could of come on the car. Personalized plates to me look wrong on vintage cars and all the cute names are a distraction, go ahead put something that says 64 and still have people walk up and ask "what year is this?" In CA after they went from 6 numbers and letters the plates are just ugly it's the only time I think a personalized plate works. Some states are using silk screened plastic plates yuck! wheres the metal.
And yes I'm running plates that are dare I say illegal! until the YOM law takes affect in a few months. I've been stopped but as long as I produced all the right stuff and had my plates in the storage compartment and was on my way home from a cruise in or show, at least that's what my story is, I've never had a problem being let go.

Dick, I hear what you are saying but this tag is an embossed tag just like the original in size and color. If they allow an original 64 tag with seven characters then what's the problem with a new old looking NC tag with 7 characters? Yes I do keep the current NC tag in the glove box. Seems like a grey area to me. JMHO

        Cheers,
        Craig

The law is very explicit about this Craig.

            Craig,
Heres a copy of the NC DMV requirement on plates. I don't know if this helps or not.

            LICENSE PLATES
N.C. HOUSE BILL 704 Chapter 257, Section 1. G.S. 20-63 (d) is amended by adding a new sentence at the end to read: Any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon the request of any person. Section 2. This act is effective upon ratification. In the General Assembly read three times and ratified, this the 24th day of May 1985.

I think that Dick is right. I've heard that the NC law that allows running the YOM plates was being re-looked because of abuses, such as painting the original plate colors to match the car, etc. A plate such as CW 1964 would not likely be sctutinized by police, but an obvious personalized restamp could be questioned since those were not available in 65. That being said, I drive my 65 with an original 65 NC plate and have never been stopped. Most are too busy looking at the car to notice what type of license plate it has, including police.
