    71 Horn Button Emblem

The Judging Manual states the top right hand square of the cross flag emblem should be black on 70 and 72 cars and white on 71 cars. I would like for someone to look at page 39 of the paragoon parts book Part# 7494K, w/tilt telescopic. It would appear as though the horn button they sell is for 71 only. What do you think?
If you have a 70,71 or 72 look at your emblem and let me know what color the right hand square is.

    Thank
    Frank

    Re: 71 Horn Button Emblem

The whole issue of checker color in crossed flag emblems is fuzzy. For whatever reason(s), it seemed the pattern changed from year to year and most judges check what's called out in the JG book(s) when they work through a car.

On catalog items like the Paragon part you mention, do NOT go by the picture you see! They're often 'file footage' shots not intended to absolutely/positively guarantee that that's what you'll get when you order. That's unless the descriptive text corroborates the part's configuration.

Most of the time, the order clerk will be happy to check inventory (sometimes both versions are binned together, mixed) for you....

Thanks Jack, I agree with your comments regarding Paragoon. It just happens that I am have both emblems and just want to verify which one I should use. I also know that in early 71 production many parts left over from 70 production was used. Mine is one of those early ones.

This is where that 10% 'art' aspect of restoration comes into play, Frank. I'll bet with all the survey research you go execute, the final answer comes back to you with mixed results depending on how early your 'early' 1971 is...

          Frank,

You will find more on this subject if you search in the archives. Both of my '71's have a white upper corner, they are original interior cars, VIN's 12659 & 15065.

Warren, Thanks , but I do need a little clarification. Are you saying that the white square is on the left at the staff, or on the right?

Frank, I have a last day production '71 (21701) and I appear to have a '72 horn button as the top left square is black on mine.

                Frank,

I have each style center hub, (tilt/tele & std column) both emblems have the white square on top near the flag pole.

                        Tom,

That would put the white square at the upper left near the staff as well. It is unique that the '71 has this difference over the other two years.

Thanks to all of you, the pictures and comments solved this issue. We now know the horn bottons were different on the 71,s in that there was a white square next to the staff. The judging manual could use some clarrification. It states the top right hand square of the flag emblem on the 71 is white, when in fact it's the top left square next to the staff that is white. Thanks to all of you for your comments, the response was fantastic.

I am the second owner of a '71 s/n 2643, Nov 70 production. Have owned it since June '72 and it has the original horn button of a 1970.
