    C3 Axle Year and Ratio

    A friend of mine gave me a cast Iron C3 axle and I would like to confirm with you what the year and ratio it is. On the bottom I found the identification number AWW 171 E1. I believe it is a 1971 with a 3.08:1 gear ratio

      The stamped code translates:

      AW 3.08 ratio
      W Warren Motive axle Plant
      171 Manufactured the 171th day
      E Eaton posi unit
      1 Built on 1st shift

          The casting number and casting date are on the driver's side, adjacent to where the strut rod bracket bolts on - that will give you the year.
