    Thanks for your advice,

Oil dip stick and tube are NO paint. I believe the tube is tin plated over copper plate, and the oil dipstick is natural.

I think the transmission dipstick tube is plated a gray phosphate, but let's see what some others say about that one. That dipstick is also natural i believe.

My original post was some time ago (i.e., restoration has been going slower than expected). I have received several different answers to my question (also posted on CovetteForum), so I wondering if anyone could give me a definitive answer snce I could not find an answer in my NCRS judging manual:

      Thanks for any guidance,

          Gary,
I expect Steve is looking for confirmation of what I put out there. I too was hoping some others could confirm my statements. With enough confirmation we could take some steps to add this to the TIM&JG -- although I would swear the oil dipstick and tube are in there, or they were at one time.

I am pretty confident of the oil tube and dipstick -- at least if it is a small block we are talking about; but it has been a while since I have seen a good original TH400 dipstick and tube from this era.

Terry is dead on!!!! I'm the original owner of my 72 base engine. Can only add that the tip on the loop end of the engine dipstick is black. The description is in the engine section of the 4th edition of the 70-72 TJM. Was just confirmed at the Bend regional last month. Sorry, mine is a 4spd, can't help with the tranny dip stick

I have a late 71 THM (last week of production). The THM dipstick tube is natural. This car is a low mileage example and the presence of rust is not apparent in most places so it is hard to tell if the THM dipstick is natural or plated however my guess is that it is natural. The cup at the top of the dipstick may have been plated but I'm not 100% sure as mine shows no rust at all.

The description of the oil tube is still in the JG, Section 11 of Mechanical. But I do not find the transmission tube. Another note for the next revision.

                  Terry and Steve,
My reply was a very subtle attempt at humor. What I was trying say with perhaps a bit too much subtlety was that I would trust the answers from the guys and gals here far more than the group over at CF. Don't get me wrong, I read the CF but the majority of those asking questions seem to be in the modification mode and not originality.

My apologies if anyone took offense at my seemingly smart a$z reply.

                  Gary

No offense taken here. I just thought you might have missed my point -- so I drove the tack home with a sledge.

Looks like we have some answers, and some time to look for more original examples too.

No offense taken either. As Terry said I was just looking for additional confirmation. I do appreciate everyone's comments and I will pass them on to my friend who is leading the restoration. One day.....

Can someone tell me how I can get the oil dip stick & tube as well as the tranny dipstick refinished? Is this a "do-it-yourself" job or is there someone out there that does this type of restoration? If it is a "do-it-yourself" job, can you recommend the exact paint/finish and where I can get it?

                        Thanks for the help,

                        Steve
