    Ignition Coil 71 LS5

My JG says the coil in a 71 LS5 should be a B-R 287. The GM parts manual shows a B-R 238 who is correct?

The GM #1115238 (i.e. "B-R 238") is a SERVICE-only part number. In PRODUCTION, the GM #1115287 (i.e. "B-R 287") was used. However, the GM #1115238 and GM #1115287 were identical coils except for the number embossed on the can. Why the difference in part numbers then? Well, the GM #1115287 included the coil mounting bracket. That assembly was never available in SERVICE. The GM #1115238 was just the coil, no bracket included. So, did they actually emboss the number on the coil to represent the part number for the combination of the coil + bracket? Yes.

It will function correctly, but it will take a 20% deduction on originality points on the judging field.

Thank you; I guess I have to pay the Judges their due, but I am trying to minimize my deductions.
