    1964 327-300HP L75 Distributor Cap Part # Needed

If someone could pass along the correct distributor cap part number used for my 64 327-300HP car it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much,
    Craig W.

    Craig -

The part number won't be of much use, as there were many variations of the same cap over the years they were used; your TM&JG describes the appearance/wording on the top of the cap that judges will expect to see on your year car.

John thanks but a part number if available is what I am seeking.

Craig --- per John H., here's a few SERVICE variants, some dating back to the old orange and black container. Most on eBay seem to be brown with copper contacts, although I don't know if any in production were like that.

[...______Delco Remy______ Patent Pending______...] should be the marking, with no 'R' after pending.

All these pics are of D-309's with part # 1942654 on the box. They are brown except 3rd thumbnail is black. These eBay items sold for $103 up to $435 (the one on the right).

            Craig-----

Although various GM parts references, including the 1964 P&A Catalog that Bill mentions, list the GM #1942654 for your application, that is a SERVICE-only reference. The GM #1942654, aka Delco D-309, was not originally used for any 1964 L-75 application. What was used was a GM #1932018, aka Delco #D-308.

For some unknown reason, GM generally cataloged the D-309 and, later, D-309R for SERVICE applications which originally used either the D-308, D-309 or, later, D-308R or D309R. However, this was done only for the GM parts system; the D-308 or, later, D-308R were always available through the Delco parts system. Later, about 1975, the D-308R became available through the GM parts system. The D-308 was NEVER available through the GM parts system, though.

As John mentions, though, the D-308 had many slight variations over the years. So, all D-308, aka GM #1932018, were not exactly the same as far as appearance goes. They were exactly the same as far as FUNCTION goes, though.

Originals were Black with ALUMINUM contacts in addition to the "patent pending" and such as described by John Hinkley.
