    62, 327/300 intake manifold

Question re cast date of a 62, 327/300, ...349 cast iron intake manifold.
There are apparently two dates cast into the manifold. On the flat forward of the distributor there is a typical positive date tag cast with a screw head impressions at each end * J 16 1*. On the top of the rear runner below the casting number there is a date cast 2-2-61.

The block was cast in late March so the 2-2-61 date would make sense. Why two different cast dates? Which one takes precedence?

    Thanks,
    Joe

Hi Joe According to the JG all the ....349 intakes had 2-2-61 but also had the real casting date. Page 53.

        Thanks Dennis and Terry,

What is the date on your intake vs the cast date on the block?

It is interesting as my block is cast C 21 2 with an assembly date stamped 5 22, an 8 week difference. Does a J 16 1 manifold date make sense? Owned since Sept 1967 and car was totally unmolested so I assume the manifold was factory installed but hey a new 86 vette had a head on with my sister on the way from the showroom so anything is possible.

The manifold date falls within 6 months of the casting date but short of the assembly date. Is this an abberation or replacement or do other documented 62s show widespread dates?

        Thanks again,

        Joe

Hi Joe My '62 block casting date C182, assembly date 0326, intake 2-2-61 and J61. Hope this helps. I just noticed your date of J161, pretty close to my J61. I'll check and see if I left off a digit.

My guess is the 2-2-61 is a drawing date, perhaps matching the "drawing release" date. Don't use 2-2-61 for the "real" casting date.

Funny, but I just noted that I own such a manifold the day before I read this thread. Unfortunately, no 62 car to go with it...

I thought the 3799349 intakes used in 62 were aluminum and in 63 they switched to iron. Can someone educate me on this?

                Terry,

Just rechecked the intake and the date is J 6 1, same as yours. I erred when I typed 16. Cool info!

                62 - 300 = 349 cast iron
                62 - 340 = 397 al
                63 - 300 = 349 cast iron
                63 - 340 = 129 al

My 62 is gone but I'm trying to track it down, kept the engine. Listed it on the other website, info wanted/ available. Suspect it is in my area. Sold the car in 73.

62 340HP aluminum intakes were 3795397, if my memory serves me correctly. That was different, obviously from the 300HP manifold which was cast iron and 349 casting, which has been the subject of this thread.
