Krylon BBQ Black is almost perfect. I have used it for years
with great results. It handles heat rather well too as a bonus.

Shhhh! Keep it quiet. They may discontinue that too . Actually, isn't it a bit flatter than 1613? I use it when I want to simulate a phosphate finish (with a little hand rubbing to bring out a bit of a sheen).

        Re: Krylon 1613 discontinued

For originally semi-gloss parts, I used to use 1613 myself. For parts such as splash shields, and other engine compartment pieces, I found it to be too flat compared to original. I started using Plasti Kote, anti-rust enamel semi-gloss black with good results. It was more of a match. It too is now hard to find, so I "googled" it and ordered it on line. If you like the sheen of 1613, try Zero-Rust Black 28-62SP. It has the best spray tip of any can I've ever used. You can use it extremely close to the part without drips.

Please note that 1613 has not been discontinued. The new part numbers you see are on the retail (big box) side. The 1613 you know is still available from the industrial side---Krylon Industrial Products. It retains the same formilua whereas the retail paint is different---can not recoat. The change is affecting all Krylon products---so if you want the same 1613 or 1601 be sure the can says--Industrial under the Krylon red header.

              Re: Krylon 1613 discontinued

Krylon 1613 is readily available at Travers Tool. If you buy 6 cans at a time its really cheep. 800-221-0270 or www.travers.com Visa MC
THey also list the Dull Aluminum in their 2007 catalog. Some have said i paint my fuel injections with Krylon dull aluminum. This is true. Actuallly I dip them and hang them out to dry. Real pretty that way. Try it. Learned this from Whittington. JD. (just kidding)
P.S. I wonder if Krylon has the semi-gloss black in a different part number? I didn't read all the posts.

Called Ace headquarters to see if they had any of the discontinued 1613 and they said it is still available (as Frank mentioned) at industrial stores. Here is the link for Krylon Industrial and a drop down of where to buy it. A couple places listed are at Grainger and Fasenal. Be sure you get the Krylon (5-Ball) Interior-Exterior Paint. For some reason if you type in 1613 on that site it pulls up an Engine paint #DE1613 which is a Gloss Black.

                  The website is: http://www.kpg-industrial.com/produc...xterior_paint/

P.S. I asked the guy why they changed the paint and he told me they didn't that all they did was change the number. I told him some of our members had tried the new one and I hated to break it to him but it is different. He wasn't amused.

Its slightly flatter not much difference but it goes
on much more evenly. Its too utilitarian of an item
for them to discontinue. After all dont we all have BBQ's
in need of a repaint every so often?

                      Title: Krylon 1613

                      5/30/2008 8:29:57 AM [Agent Note]

                      Hi Scott,

Thank you for your inquiry with the Krylon website. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us.

The Interior-Exterior product line was replaced in favor of the new Indoor/Outdoor line, which is a different formula and also more glossy then the original product. The old Interior-Exterior 1613 color is still available, but now only through Krylon-Industrial: http://www.kpg-industrial.com/produc...xterior_paint/

Thank you again for your inquiry. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

                      Sincerely,
                      Eric

                        Scott,
Sure would've saved a lot of speculation if Krylon's support folks (
Eric and Jared) had been on the same page. Here's the original response I received. No mention about 1613 remaining available through the industrial line. Glad it is though.

                        5/27/2008 1:53:27 PM [Agent Note]

                        Hi Jeff,
Thank you for your inquiry. The 1613 has been discontinued, reformulated and renumbered with 51613. The 1613 is no longer being manufactured or distributed.

I apologize I could not help you with this request.

                        Regards,
                        Jared

I have found some cans of Krylon 1613 at Wal-Marts but not all. You bet I cabbaged those.

Another color that is hard to get is the Dull Aluminum. It may be discontinued.
If all else fails go to your local Car Quest store and have them mix it up for you in PPG enamel. 24 ozs of gloss black to 7 ozs of flattener.(confirm this) End result is a very pleasing semi flat black that is even better than the Krylon. Have them put it in spray cans for you. Not a cheap project but you will have that.[/quote]

Martin, just out of curiosity, what did you have to pay for them? I just bought 6 (that's all they had) from my local Ace also and payed $21 and some change.
