    Re: Help identifying a carburetor

    Joe,
I don't know about what application would be correct but the carb looks to be a an early Rochester 4GC. It was used on many V-8 engines from the mid-fifties till about '65 or '66. I have a '65 Olds 442 that uses a later variant of this carb. Is there a ID tag on it somewhere?
Sorry I don't have more info.

Joe.....This 4GC carb was used both on 283/220 hp and 327/250 hp. This was offered from 62-65 on 327 and 64-66 on 283 but not on Corvette applications. The early 4GC's used on 283 and 348 can quickly be identified by only 2 vents while the the pictured one shows the 4 vents. Throttle bore and venturi sizes were smaller on the earlier applications.

Jim's got it right-----it's a Rochester 4GC carburetor. These were widely used on many GM vehicles from 1952 until 1966. I believe they were first used on Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles for the 1952 model year and first used on Chevrolets for the 1956 model year. They were never used on any Corvette, though.

I believe the 4GC was Rochester's first 4 barrel carburetor---certainly its first mass-produced 4 barrel carb. It was ultimately replaced by the QuadraJet, Rochester's LAST 4 barrel carburetor.

Without the metal tag, I don't know of any way to positively ID the carb as to original application. With casting numbers off the air horn and float bowl, it might be possible to narrow it down, though.

Thanks.. I will see if I can find any casting numbers.. I didnt think it was a corvette carburetor... but it is on my '60 now and works ok.. other than having to modify the base of the air filter housing.

No, the Rochester 4-Jet was never used on Corvette. But, you'll find it on many other Chevy engines (especially truck & bus) + other GM cars. Cores are plentiful from the scrap yards and you're sitting on a solid $10-20 worth of non-Corvette part here!

              Thanks Jack...

I have a 64 intake manifold that the $10-$20 sits on. The car was originally a fuelie, but i wanted a driver.. so i was ok with the set up.. some day I may put a Fuel Injection system back in..

Nice to know it may be worth $30 some day..
