O.K. Is there someone who was able to install a repro firewall pad with repro grommets? Cutting away some insulation surrounding the back of the hole of the pad allows the grommet to be inserted and the inner edge of the grommet to be filled by the pad. Once installed in the pad, only the rounded surface of the grommet protrudes. What needs to protrude is the inner edge so that it can be inserted into and secured to the firewall hole. But that inner edge is filled by the pad. It seems to me that the firewall grommet needs at least another 1/4'' depth to allow for the inner edge to fit through the hole and be secured. No?

Re: C1 Firewall Pad Installation
Richard, usually it's a 2 person job. One person pushing the grommet from the inside with a very blunt ended tool (cut off taped over round screwdriver so it won't tear or poke a hole in the grommet) fitting into the grommet hole and another person pulling from the firewall side. Carefully wrap wax coated string around the narrow neck portion of the grommet then feed it through the firewall hole and pull on it. Also found that soapy water on the grommet tip and neck/sleeve will provide some lubrication and help get it through the firewall hole. The reason for waxed string (used by Telecom installers and aircraft people) is that it won't cut the grommet. Hope this helps. Good luck, Gary....NCRS Texas Chapter
