    Restorer story.

In the current Restorer there is a story about an unfortunate incident on a road tour.
The engine in what seemed to be a very nice Corvette was destroyed.
I just can't seem to understand why the car was driven to it's death.
The engine gave all the signs of an impending disaster.
I only bring this up as something that we hopefully can all learn from.
    My sympathy to the owner.

    Re: Restorer story.

I couldn't believe that article. Continuing to drive a car that is obviously distressed was reckless and unsafe. To endanger the lives of other motorist, "It was a scary feeling: The New York State Thruway has very narrow shoulders, and cars and trucks seem to fly by at ungodly speeds.", so he can get his points??? His 'esprit de corps' is very misguided, why didn't the others members of his group discourage him instead of aiding him? And The Corvette Restorer thought enough of that misguided campaign to feature an article? I'm new to the NCRS but this is not what I would expect. Hope I don't get black-balled or cause enemies over this but when it comes to safety I can be overbearing.

And now that I've pizzed everyone off, let me introduce myself. I have owned Corvettes since 1968 and currently have a 95 ZR-1 and a 64 convertible. I hope to get advice, assistance, encouragement and meet many new friends at the NCRS, so I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes and I'll try to be nice in the future.

      Re: Restorer story.

I reckon you had to have been along on the Road Tour.

It was the owner's car and he did what he thought best at the time for reasons he thought appropriate. If you got it, drive it.

We will be pleased to drive with Joe this summer on the National Road Tour enroute to St. Charles.

I lost a rod bearing in my 60 FI 2 years ago going to the St Louis regional. Fortunately mine was not as bad as in the article. It is always a tough call when you have a problem on the road. Don H.

There will be a follow up article in an upcoming issue on the saving and complete rebuilding of the original block. Very interesting reading too!

doubt you've pissed anyone off. there were many ncrs members on that road tour who discouraged the owner from continuing to "pound" the poor SBC.like another poster stated, it was the opwners car. welcome to the best car hobby club in existence.mike

Sorry, but when I read the article it made me cringe too. I hate to use the word "FOOL", but if it fits, so be it. I mean, was it really worth it? Was there that big of a prize at the end worth blowing up that perfectly good, and hard to replace engine? This is the NCRS, not NASCAR! We should encourage safe and responsible use of these old machines. Lord knows I've been admonished enough by other members for my "Speed Racer" tactics with my original 63 and I'm taking them to heart.

I have read some of these posts concerning the article that I wrote about my adventure on the Road Tour. I have kept quiet because people are entitled to their opinion and it seems that any organization has all types of people that make up its rank & file. But I take umbrege with someone calling me a fool and also people that express distaste over the 'dangerous" situation that they would like to think that I created. This is an automobile, Cars break down sometimes when you drive them. Do you think I had my car break down on purpose on the Thruway? The Thurway was barely an hour that we had to travel on. All the roads we traveled most of the time were secondary roads. It was bad timing that the car finally broke down on the Thurway. Every precaution was taken and everyone who was nearby came to my aid when my car broke down. Anyone who came to my aid is a 'grown-up " and knows what the risks are. I knew that there were risks and its always nice for someone to be an arm chair quarterback after the facts and share " your know it all" attitude with everyone and express your self righteous safety issues. I'd like to also state that NO-ONE and I mean NO ONE who looked at my car or who worked on my car told me to quit. Everyone who I spoke to discussed the risks of what could happen. I discussed the pros & cons with my wife and we decided to go forward. I discussed my issues with the Tour leader and the decision was mine to make and I decided to try and complete the run.

I think that anyone who speaks negatively about me and my car does not know me and most important does not understand the work and effort that goes into the Founders Award. The purpose of sharing my story with everyone was to let people know that the support of the NCRS was outstanding throughout this journey & adventure. and I would recommend anyone to go on the road tour and not feel that it is just for C5'S or C6's. I wanted to tell people not to be afraid to drive your damn car and you are not alone on the highway if something goes wrong.

Btw- The Block was not damaged, it was saved and the car is running better than ever and I'm going to be on the road tour to St Louis this July and when I get the Founders award this year this "fool" WILL BE VERY HAPPY. So if you have something you'd like to say to me in person you can find me there.

I stand by my opinion/statement of the 24th May. This kind of story is the epitomy of the "over the top" radical Restorer that others in the automotive hobby love to hear about and laugh at. But then, It is YOUR car to do with what you will. It's a free country, at least until the next election.
