    clutch release related noise

There is a slight "clunk/creaking" type noise as I release the clutch, from a full stop only, both in forward and reverse. It never occurs any other time. It's only momentary, and seems to occur as a result of the weight shift as the car just begins to move. It sounds like it's coming from the area of the clutch cross shaft, which I removed for inspection. Everything appeared normal. It seems to be forward of the transmission and front drive shaft u-joint. Any suggestions what to look for?

If you don't hear the noise when actuate the clutch in the garage with the engine off, the noise is in the driveline and is occuring when power is being transmitted...it is not in the clutch linkage.

If you're not observing any other abnormality with the transmission, I would suspect a universal joint. Noises telegraph through the chassis...sometimes it's hard to isolate where the noise is coming from, especially when you're driving the car.

      Chuck,
Any particular test I can do to try to pin it down to the u-joints? They are original to the car (86K)

I'm no ace gearhead like some here that surely know a better idea. The only thing I can think of is something you have to be a little crazy to try.

I would place the car SECURELY on jack stands and have someone you trust in the driver seat with foot on the brake pedal with the engine idling. With the parking brake set, and foot on the brake pedal, have the driver SLOWLY release the clutch with transmission in gear (preferably they don't stall it)...if I felt a pronouned "clunk/creak" from the driveshaft as the clutch was being released, I would assume it was a universal joint and replace driveshaft U-joints.

You should at least have a better idea of where the noise is coming from if you learn nothing else. Be careful.

Rob, Set the emergence brake tight and chock the wheels, slide under the car with a screwdriver and try to turn the halfshafts and driveshaft and look for small movement in u-joints. Do this with the engine off, never take a chance on hurting yourself or wrecking your car. Also suspect is the rear differential front cushion mount, if the rubber is old the rear will chunk when starting in forward and reverse because it will snap up and down with torque.
