    A.I.R. pump

    I am wondering if anyone can assist me with a question which came up during flight judging? I had my 1976 L-48 4 speed flight judged at Michigan last week and the judges pointed out that the car did not have an A.I.R. pump which is required according to the current judging guide. I drove the car off the dealer's lot new with 7 miles on it and for all practical purposes the engine compartment has never been touched. Response to an earlier post noted that the tag on the power brake booster would indicate if a pump was present and the tag on this vehicle does not indicate a pump. The tag on my car was identified as an XX tag however, one which the JG does not recognize. Can anyone provide any information that will assist me in proving that this vehicle was delivered without an A.I.R. pump? The judges admitt that an L-48 4 speed for this year was rare and it may be the first time thay have encountered it. Anything information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I ordered and purchased a new 1976 L48, 4-speed C3 in Michigan. It never had an A.I.R. pump.

    I have a paper on Corvette A.I.R. pump useage. I no longer have the source of the paper.

    The information from that paper with regard to 1976 is as follows:

    "1976, all Corvettes returned to CCS (Controlled Combustion System), except California-certified cars which used A.I.R."

      Somebody will know better than me, I'm sure...................... but I just don't remember seeing smog pumps on 76's. My first Corvette was a 76 and it did not have one either.

        I think the key to the A.I.R. pump is what was decided at the meet when I found that in one of the vendors catalogs they sold the XX decal and it was used after Feb. 26,1976. The label on your car did not say A.I.R. No deduction was taken is what I think happened because your car was built the next to the last day of 76 model production.
        As a member of the 75-77 team we need owners of 1976 4 speeds to speak up or some good information of how the 4 speeds were built before March 1976. Their could be information in the 76 AIM but I do not have one.The judging guide will be changed when the information is collected and the team leader is satisfied a change is needed. I hope we get some information from this post.

          Hi Lyle. I appreciate all of the judges efforts in helping resolve this and especially their final decision to accept the lack of a pump on my car as original. I committed to Marvin that I would try to gather additional information so that I could confirm this was correct and changes could be made to the judging guide if appropriate. Hopefully we can verify that the pump was deleted sometime during the model year as we suspect. Thanks again for your help and hopefully we will see you again soon.

            I got my 1976 AIM from Chevrolet Engineering (which may or may not mean much.)

            UPC 6T Page 1 notes A.I.R. useage as "1YA00 &L48 &NB2; &L82". This useage was revised on 9-25-75 (ECR 64930) from "All".

            Now the NB2 option code is Exhaust Emission Controls. That also probably means "California" or possibly "high altitude" in the 1976 time frame.

            So I would read the revision to mean All California L48s and All L82s.

            The revision date of 9-25-75 for A.I.R. useage might mean a late change and all early 1976 models had A.I.R. Or it could mean that the engineering AIM books were just catching up with actual production.

            Belt Routing Sheet (UPC 6K Sheet #2; drawing date 2-15-75; ECR 61141; Belt Routing 1YA00 ALL) shows four variations of belt routings. All four variations show an A.I.R. pump. From that page you might infer that A.I.R. pumps were standard on all engines. It might just mean that engineering overlooked updating the page.

              I have a copy of the 1976 Chilton Emission and safety manual covering Chevrolet V-8 and the notation under "Emission Equipment" for V-8 engines is as folllows " All Models" Air Pump : Corvette 350 4BBL V8-HP only" That would seem to exclude the L-48 and Include the L-82. Drop me an email if you would like a scanned copy of the appropriate page. Should also be explained in the service manual.

                  1976 Corvettes with L-48 and FEDERAL EMISSIONS certification did NOT use an AIR system. This included both automatic and 4 speed cars as well as those delivered to high altitude areas.

                  Emissions label "XX" , GM #458578, would have been used on later 1976 L-48 with federal emissions applications.

                  For earlier 1976 L-48 with federal emissions, I think that the emissions label was GM #372564. However, I don't have the code associated with this label.

                    Don't recall the source now, but a table I keep up with for 76 emission codes shows GM #372564 carried either a ZB or LX broadcast code.

                    I've found over the years that the 75-77 tech manual "dated" in terms of emission control specifications as Lyle points out as well.
