    67' 435 Horse Engine Rebuild Initial Start/breakin

    Hi everyone,
I am finally getting my 427/435 horse ready for it's initial startup since it's rebuild. The engine was rebuilt in 2001 by Classic Engine Company in Oskosh Wisconsin by a previous owner. It has been in a garage and in my basement for 3years and "HAND" turned over a few times. I called Classic Engines for advice but no reply so far. The engine was spun in 2001 on Classics' engine tester and shipped OK. Could you please advise as how to set it up for it's initial startup and break in? I want to be sure I use the correct oil, etc. Someone in our Michigan Chapter suggested removing one set of valve springs? Is this necessary? As usual any information will be well recieved by me. Thank you very much.

P.S. OUR MICHIGAN REGIONAL WAS FANTASTIC. I AM HEARING NOTHING BUT GOOD FEEDBACK ABOUT THE SHOW. AS YOU KNOW MICHIGAN CHAPTER WILL BY HOSTING THE NATIONAL EVENT IN 2010. LOOKS LIKE THE TURNOUT WILL BE HUGE!!!! HOPE TO MEET ALOT OF YOU THERE.

Does it have an OE equivalent cam and valvesprings? Did GM initial start up these engines with just one valvespring? Therein lies your answer.

There have been many threads on on oil and initial startup including one about a week ago - use an "preoiler", CJ-4 oil, and a bottle of GM EOS.

If "assembly lube" was used when the engine was built change the filter after initial breakin or one hour of run time. Top off the oil and run it 500-1500 miles, then do a complete oil and filter change and continue to use CJ-4 oil.

      Thanks Duke,
Sorry for not responding sooner but I had trouble logging in over the last several days. I can't get GM EOS around here. What do you recommend for a substitute and what exactly CJ-4 oil?
      Again thanks, Jerry

        Jerry -

The "old" EOS (P/N 1052367) was discontinued last fall, and has been replaced by the "new" EOS, P/N 88862586; if your GM dealer doesn't stock it yet, he can get it for you.

CJ-4 is the API (American Petroleum Institute) service designation (in the round "target" symbol on the container) for diesel oil; in our area, Shell Rotella is the most common brand available, usually in 15W40 (although you may also find it in 10W30). Wal-Mart has it, and some of the quick oil change places have it too.

          Hi John,
Is the new GM additive the same as the old? By the way I put Rotella in the 67'. Will call you for the start up.

GM says it's the same formulation.
