'62 AFB air cleaner assembly questions?

    Hi,
My '62 300 has a repro air cleaner assembly on it and I'm going to start looking for a decent original.
Were the single carb assemblies the same from '58 to '62? Anywhere where I could see some good pics of the correct base and inside of the top? What is the price range for a decent one these days?

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

The 58-62 had many variations of carburetors, from WCFB's to AFB's. A great resource for this kind of info is the 53-67 Spec Guide you can by from the NCRS store here online. Click into the C1 Library section and you'll find it.

Air cleaner info can be found from the 53-62 Noland Adams Restoration/Technical Guide, along with the 61-62 Judging Manual, also available from the store.

Finding an original may be some work. Price will likely be high.

'62, is the only year an air cleaner was available for the only year a AFB carb was used on a C1. The lids of a 60, 61 or 62 air cleaned may be the same, but the base is not. Also, a different part no. was used for the AFB air cleaner, because of the base of the air cleaner. According to my '62 parts book, the parts of the air cleaner were not serviced seperately.

        Dave--
What is the difference between the AFB base and the WCFB base? I don't know that I've ever been aware of the difference, and I know we've never included that in the judging manual.
        Thanks,

Mike, you offer up a good question. I have the parts book in front of me now. This is a revised June 1,1962 P&A 30. They show the same Grp. and Pt. no. for the 55-61 Corvette (w/4BC) and 62 Corvette (exc. H/Per.,Sp. H/Per., F.I.) as Grp. No. 3.402, Pt. no. 5645689. For the 62 Corvette w/H/Per., Sp. H/Per. it is the same Grp. No. but the pt. no. is 5648423. Now I am not an expert on '62's and know much less on the earlier Corvette's but I do know that the first A.C. may work on a '55, but it is not correct and must be looked at as a service part. But, this being a current parts book for the '62's, I would guess the AFB vs. WCFB is what makes the difference in the part. no.s. I don't have a AFB car, so I can't guess what is different about the base.

I've been told that the '62 only air cleaner base is one with locating tabs around the center hole. Guy at Carlisle last year had one. Said it was '62 only. There's some bent metal hanging down from the center hole at the side. Takes up about 30 degrees of a 360 degree circle. Not even. Has ridges. I believe that's designed to correspond to something on the inside or the outside of the carb throat so as to locate the base. The base has bumps in different spots for clearance of some carb linkages. So it needs to be placed on the air horn in a certain orientation. I recently bought such a base from a member who said it was original to his '62. Note that the '62 AFB air horn (at least the 3269S) was different from the '63, '64, and '65 Corvette AFBs.

The part number, 5648423 for the air cleaner is shown for all carburetors in the assembly manual, page B98 for the base engine and pages B213-214 for the Special High Performance and High Performance engines.
