    Correct "091" Ignition Coil-Early '62

Looking now for help with a coil.
See excerpts from an on line discussion and whether the correct NCRS judge-proof coil does or does not have two RAISED bosses and does or does not have the "091" and "12 V" embossed 1 1/2" from the BOTTOM of the canister.
    Thanks much for clarity.

Dave, I went through my Corvette Restorer CD and found an article that you may be referencing. "Identifying 1953-1974 Factory Installed Delco-Remy Ignition Coils" by Kenneth Kayser.
One particular papagraph caught my eye. "One other change should also be noted. The 1115091 Ignition Coil was last used as OEM on 1964 high-performance Corvette engines. On March 8, 1967 the embossed "091" and the "12 V" underneith it was lowered 2 1/2" on the container (the figure 7 shows where the info was before and after the change). Why this was done remains a mystery, and futher research needs to be done to determine if other ignition coils were likewise affected"

This clearly suggests that prior to the change in 1967 the info was near the TOP rather than near the bottom of the container. Yet some suppliers offer this so identifyied coil but with footnote that it might not pass NCRS judging?????????

    The plot thickens!

    Bill,
The article that you refer to is the one I was thinking of. It appeared in Volume 22 #2 and is by Ken Kayser. I have heard conflicting information on this subject over the years and it prompted me to add an opposing view to your post. Hopefully we can get some additional input on this subject from members that are more knowledgeable.

I have a "091" coil from my 1960 and the top of the embossed 091 is 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the coil............

Plus, there was follow-on commentary in either the next issue of Driveline or the one after where several with known original coils in their '62-63 cars had configurations that matched the description Ken Kayser gave of the '091 coil prior to the first documented Delco changes made in the 1961 era.

If memory serves, there was some foot shuffling to the effect of not knowing how much inventory may have been in the pipeline at the time the changes in production were authorized and/or how long it might have taken to re-work how many assy line fixtures that produced the ignition coils???

Dale Pearman was really into the coils as most of you know. I believe he wrote an article on the 107's.
I asked him one time about an 091 coil f04 my Feb 63 engine. I asked Dale if the embossed 091 12-V should be near the top or near the bottom of the Delco coil. His answer was depends on who you talk to. JD

OK, My head's beginning to ache. Do you guys who know this stuff (I'm still learning...I know less than enough to be dangerous) think the Corvette Central coil with correct numbers embossed at the top of the cannister pass BG judging? Or do I need to go to Goat ----? I need an Absolut....maybe a double !

Bill, Go onto ebay and type in 091 coil and up comes one that was reportedly from a 1960. The photos the seller put up plus his description are quite good. Buy it now price is only $400.00!
Notice the top of the coil pics. No bosses next to the posts. Embossed numbers at the bottom. Very confusing in that my 091's have the bosses and the numbers near the bottom.
I have a NOS for my 63 to replace the incorrect 087 and this coil is going on whether correct or not. The coil info is a tough issue. I'd put on a nice original if you can find it and forget about it no matter where the letters are. 091's are drying up and have been for quite a while. If I could figure out how to email you here I have more info for you. John D.

                John,
I'd agree with your assessment of 091's. I like real Delco parts too. All this Goat Hill and reproduction/rebuilt stuff does nothing for me. Placement of the 091 embossement is so confusing I'd go with either location as you suggest. Presence of the bosses is another issue and I think the bosses were introduced around Calendar year 1962.

My private message was going to be this. In all my years of playing with these cars I have yet to see a real deal 091 with the numbers embossed close to the top. I heard that Ken Kayser said that in 40 years he has not seen one either. Not to say they don't exist-just that they are not typical of what is out there.
I don't knock my fellow repro dealers unless they are dishonest and take advantage of our gang.
Go with what you like but always remember than if you use the Generals part at least you will receive a decent amount of points. Good luck, JD

Found an original Delco in California.

No raised bosses but embossed data at the bottom....does not have the correct wire retainers with bent tabs, but what da' heck.
Have no idea whether it can produce the necessary volts (or any volts)but it didn't cost an arm and a leg so we'll take the risk.

Back on the road again thanks to you guys !! Truly appreciated your input.
