Starter Solenoid - Plated Finish or Painted Black

I have seen in a couple of previous threads that stated starter solenoids were painted black. Is this true for all years and all engine configurations?

Specifically I have a newly aquired 11008400 for my 1969 L68 that appears to have a nicely painted original gloss black solenoid on it. Should it be black or just plated?

I believe that most, if not all, of the solenoids installed in the 68-69 period were painted black. However, they were not gloss black. They were more of a semi-flat black.

      Mike --- here's a service 1114356, and it's what I'd call a semi-gloss (rather than Joe's description of semi-flat [glass half full ? empty ?]).

Also, my GM P&A30 parts catalogs for 1969 do indicate the "356" as the service solenoid for the "8400" starter.

        Wayne,

Judging by your picture this looks like an original starter & solenoid with the correct colors. If I can see a reflection I call it gloss. I guess some call it semi-gloss and yet others call it semi-flat.

Some say the solenoid cap is black, some say brown. What say you about the Bakelite cap? I'm guessing black but maybe both are OK. Or if they painted the assembled starter, maybe the cap got painted with the solenoid. '66 BB

George, I have a original one on my 72 small block and its is black bakelite, maybe the replacements down the road may have changed to brown, and there is black overspary on the bakelite. I do have a older delco replacement and it is brown bakelite.

There was a post a while back on the starters painting, its seems there may have been days that they were not painted, when painted ran out or maybe a boost in the production line. This came from a delco remy starter production line worker.
