Tires - New Rubber for the Road

I am looking for anyone who has experience with, or knowledge of, the Goodyear EAGLE F1 GS-D3 Ultra High-Performance tire.

I have owned this car since the year 2000 and it is now time for me to replace the tires. Since I had no problems with the GS-C tires, and I like the Goodyear line, I had planned to replace them with the same GS-C non EMT rated tires for the softer ride. Problem is that now Goodyear only makes the EAGLE GS-C in an EMT tire. In talking with the Goodyear people here in town, and reading the brochure, it looks like the European-designed ultra high-performance Goodyear EAGLE F1 GS-D3 might now be the tire of choice. This is the leading performance tire in the Goodyear line, and a full set of P255/45ZR17 front & P285/40ZR17 rear is $790 less expensive than a full set of EAGLE GS-C EMT tires.

Herein lies another problem. It seems that Goodyear has a national backlog waiting for these EAGLE F1 GS-D3 tires and availability is questionable.

John, I have had the Eagle F1 GS D3's on both a C4 and a C5 and really liked them. Great handling and riding tire. I am aware that they are on back order right now. Worth the wait if there is light at the end of the tunnel.

My 1994 LT1 originally came equipped with Extended Mobility Tires (EMT), but when the previous owner (president of the local Corvette club) replaced the tires he opted to install non EMT rated Goodyear EAGLE GS-C tires. Why? Maybe for a softer ride; a less expensive tire; or he just didn’t like the EMT option.

Now I’m looking for some advice and/or comments from the great intelligent Corvette minds in the know that surf this forum, and who know the feeling when the rubber meets the road.

I'm a "Goodyear Guy", too. However, I don't think I'd use an Eagle F1 GS-D3. I'm sure this tire performs very well and it's certainly very popular. However, the tread design on this tire is so "radical" that, in my opinion at least, it changes the appearance of the car. I really think that if this was the only Goodyear model available to me, I'd have to switch to another brand.

Unfortunately, at the present time it and the GS-C EMT (which, as you have found, are a lot more expensive than the GS-D3) are the only available Goodyear tires in the original sizes for your 1994 application. If it were me, I think I'd "gulp hard" and go with the EMT's. This way, you will maintain not only near-original configuration but EXACT original configuration.

By the way, I would not expect that these GS-C EMT's to be around much longer. They may even have already been discontinued from production and are being sold out of inventory. So, in the not-too-distant future, I don't think these will be even an option for you.
      In Appreciation of John Hinckley
