After many years, I need to top off my power steering fluid. I read the archives, but the latest post is several years old. They basically say that all fluids are compatible. Is this still the consenus? Can I just go to an auto parts store and get a bottle of PS fluid and it'll be okay to use? I don't think Type A ATF is available any longer. While I'm at it, do I need to drain the system and replace the fluid? I have no idea how old the fluid in it is. My car is a '67.

I have always recommended that people use genuine GM power steering fluid that is available through GM dealers. It is compatible with any of the genuine older fluids.

Type A ATF is no longer available but the current Dexron III should be no problem if the original spec was ATF.
It's also not a bad idea to flush the system every 40 years or so. Disconnect the return hose and route it to a drain pan. Have a helper man a clamp to shut off the return flow when you give the command.
With the front end on jackstands have another helper start the engine and slowly turn the wheel back and forth. You man the reservoir and poor in fresh ATF in as the level drops. (It will drop pretty fast.) After flushing through nearly two quarts have the helper below clamp off the return line and reattach it to the pump.
Then start the engine and check the that the reservoir shows some fluid, shut down the engine and top off the reservoir to the proper level.
