Power steering control valve shield for 67

Did original 1967 power steering control valves have the shield integrated into the assembly or was this done later than 67 model year. Most of the exhanges units seem to have them installed. Also the boot cover on most of the replacements is the gold cad, is this correct or should it be silver cad or zinc?
    Thank you

The stone shield wasn't used until the C3 era; Lone Star has control valves without them.

      Tim,

The boot shield was painted black as was the boot . So whatever finish you have doesn't matter, just shoot it black.

        Tim,
I have to disagree with the previous post. I know it seems logical because the entire unit was painted black (including the end cap) , However,I have 2 original control valves from a 1966 and a 1967. The grease fitting was not painted, attachment bolt or the silver cadmium clamp. Just my observations. Now I am wondering what others have observed.

As I recall the hose guide bracket (GM #7819613) was added to the valve and adapter assembly around 1973 or 1974. Saginaw was using GM part numbers (7819xxx) during that time frame so it couldn't have been on earlier valve and adapters. Also the drawing of the 1975 valve and adapter assembly has that bracket in place.

The original one off my 66, complete with x cap ,was all black.

The JG says it should be all black.

I guess like everything else about these cars , nothing was absolute !

You are one of the few to correctly identify this piece; it's a HOSE GUIDE. While it may appear as a shield and might even function as a shield, that's not what it was for.

It was added to the valves for, I believe, the 1974 model year. There were actually at least TWO different guides. 1974-75 used guide GM #7817342. 1976 and later used guide GM #7819613. It's even possible that sometime after 1976 and before 1982 another guide bracket was used.

I have an NOS example of the 7817342 around here and it's configured considerably different than the one we're used to seeing on these valves.
