I am old enough to remember the days when you pulled the valve covers and had to dig around with a screwdriver to find the valve train. You pretty much knew it was parafin based oil. Asphaltic base oil, on the other hand, you really had to mistreat the maintenance schedule to get any deposits. Quaker State, Esso, Pennzoil, were some of the parafin based oils.

Like Joe said, base stock does not make a lot of difference, it is a blend of oils, the additive package is the key

There is one thing oil brands will do is bring out the controversy.

And as far as those paraffinic crudes - in our lab tests, they performed poorly as stated, circa 1980...

Looks like we missed one, in going into a couple of hot rod shops along the venerable Gratiot Ave, Royal Purple is the top pick as the premium oil amongst those polled although one racer was using Castrol.

      Let the controversy continue.

Is this a good choice for my L88 too ?

I guess you didn't read my article in The Corvette Restorer about a year ago - and a link to an online verision appears earlier in the thread!

What more can I say other than this thread was resurrected today from almost a year ago, by someone who wasn't a member then and has obviously not looked at the archives on this subject.

All the facts, industry standards, marketing BS, amateur "expert" BS, and whatever else has been presented and is readily available. It's time for everyone to review the material, make a decision, and go buy some oil.

The inside of that engine was just as you described for the engine of your friend's sister in law. My engine, since new, got regular oil changes and the only oil it ever saw was Pennzoil.

I see the common denominator here being regular oil changes.

The original engine in my 1969 had regular oil changes at the recommended intervals or less with Pennzoil. When I tore it down at 110,000 miles it looked like it had never had an oil change. Of course, the oils in those days were nowhere near as good as oils are today. However, the situation I described with my friend's sister-in-law's Camaro was also with older oil formulations, too. I can say, for sure, the Shell motor oil did a whole lot better job of keeping her engine clean than the Pennzoil did for mine.
