I am old enough to remember the days when you pulled the valve covers and had to dig around with a screwdriver to find the valve train. You pretty much knew it was parafin based oil. Asphaltic base oil, on the other hand, you really had to mistreat the maintenance schedule to get any deposits. Quaker State, Esso, Pennzoil, were some of the parafin based oils.
Like Joe said, base stock does not make a lot of difference, it is a blend of oils, the additive package is the key
