C2: Chrome plating on glove box lock case

The accompanying photo shows a mid-year (correct for part of 63 and 64-67) glove box lock case & bolt at the bottom and an NOS lock case at the top. Notice that the original mid-year case has a crude chrome plating over the outer part of the case, whereas the NOS case is unplated. Does anyone know how to plate an NOS case so that it will pass judging as original? I'm guessing it wouldn't be cost effective to do this. In which case, does anyone know of a source for correctly plated cases?

    Thanks,

    Gary

In the picture that part doesn't look like chrome plate. It looks like it's been polished. all the locks I've seen are like the dull one.

Gary, the lock case in my 66 appears to be chrome, although not good quality. It is better/smoother than the chrome one in your pic though.
The tongue on the chrome one in the pic looks different than mine. Mine looks exactly like the one on the unchromed one in your picture.
I think the chrome lock cyl was used in Corvette for 64-67 and some Chevrolet SS models in the 60's but it's been discontinued for many years.

If i remember correctly, early 63's that used the "keyhole" style IP door lock were unplated.

Gary -- Here's comparison of NOS versus chromed case from early '65. Chrome is decent. Mould # is B7 on chromed one versus B1 on NOS.

          Wayne,

I didn't show my original mid-year retainer, but that is chrome plated as well, with "AWT" stamped into the inside.

Gary -- here's my chrome retainers (early and late '65) The AWT stamp shows. I also include lock assy from my late car. Interesting barrel insofar as there's only ONE hole to release the tumblers (at 12 o'clock) rather than at 12 and 3pm when viewed from the passenger seat. Don't know if it's supposed to be original -- probably not after what you've stated.

The lock cyl case in my 66 looks exactly like the chrome one in Waynes pic. The retainer is chrome as well. I think the small phillips screw that holds the retainer is chrome too.

                Wayne,

The one-hole cases are a bit of a pain if the key is lost and the core is oriented so the tumblers aren't visible in the hole. Then you need to pick it before being able to pull the core.
