Need some advise from some experienced judges.

I've just volunteered to assist with judging at our local chapter meet this coming June. My passion is for C2's and C3's. I have many years experience with Corvettes, but have never participated at the judges level.

I'm looking for a little advise and encouragement from the guys who have been there. I'm a rookie and my knowledge is limited, but I'm anxious to help and very eager to learn.

Any advise for a new guy showing up at his first event??

    Thanks.

It's the best way to learn and listen to judgeing opinions about a part and it's condition . You then see the bigger pic. Of what judges go through .Personality is a big factor among judges and most %99 are great guys.Yes there is that %1 that knows more then GM ever knew.
But at the end you have a better feeling of being a part of NCRS.

Knowledge of the judging system and how it works is 50% of the job. Listen and learn about that as much as learning about the cars.

        Tom,
Chapter Events are usually quite low key and the best place for you to get started, so you've made a good decision to begin judging at that level. Often, if you let the meet chairman know your concerns, he'll pair you with a more experienced judge to make you more comfortable as you learn the routine. Getting to take an in-detail look at a Corvette is big fun and you'll do just fine.

        Alan

          Tom:

Talk to your Judging Chairman beforehand and decide what YEAR and SECTION you will be judging. Then get a copy from him of that section of the judging manual and the score sheets. Review them before the meet so that you are familiar with the content. INTERIOR AND CHASSIS sections are also a bit easier to do for your first time(s). And if possible, try to pair up with an experienced or master judge.

Learn from your partner. In almost all circumstances the judging chairman will always pair a more inexperianced judge with a more experianced judge. You should listen and observe. Maybe you could mark the scoresheet while your partner does most of the viewing. Ask questions!

I am in agreement with Alan...At a chapter meet, you may find you are the most knowledgeable person there in your year class of interest, and in a twist you didn't expect, be additionally asked to judge a year class you have virtually no exposure to if they are short-handed on judges. It's happened to me...fun weekend...and, no doubt some cars got Top Flights they wouldn't have received at the regional level, but what the hey!

I would take with me a few pencils, a nice brite flashlight, a magnet,a mirror with a long handle and the pocket size NCRS Corvette Specifications Guide if you have them.
The chapter should have a judging guide for the area you are judging and ask to judge on the years you know best.

I think it is also helpful to read the Judging Reference Manual prior to the event. It is not year specific, and goes over a lot of the process info fairly well.

Also, if you can find a process document or training handout on the matrix it would be very helpful

Tom, We always preach at our Pittsburgh chapter that the best way to learn how to judge is attend our judging schools #2. Start out judging with an experience partner. #3. The way I learned was to OJ at the Regionals with the master judges.#4 Also attend as many of the big meets as possible and attend all of the judging seminars and schools.
I don't judge much though myself. But when I do I enjoy it. Especially look forward to judging one nice tanker coming to the Pittsburgh regional.
