    paint price shock

WOW== looking to get my car painted. Car has had a repaint 15 yrs ago. good smooth base with the exception of 3-4 cracks and dings. quotes were 25k and 18 k. (I was expecting 12 to 15) . I guess i should have been a pirate--uh --painter. 10 k was to realign doors trunk lid and hood. that seems a lot for that job. I guess this news is good news for those who are talented enough to do their own. The car is not as clunker. It is a yop flite car but has a few paint issues. oh well!!!

Check the price of materials & shop rates now. Thanks to the EPA & the cost of living this is the way it is. What was the price of gas back then? today in NE Indiana it's 3.96.

Glad I do my own paint and body. With those prices, looks like I undercharged myself!

If you have a good friend and don't wont a trailer queen , I had to redo it ( got keyed) coming home from 05 National , did it 3 years ago $2,500.00 and many NCRS guys thought I paid 10K . I don't get the prices people pay.

I think 25k is outrageous! I'm a bodyman and think about 15k is a more reasonable amount today. I just painted a buddy's 67 convertible using all PPG products DBC basecoat and DCU2042 clear and PPG lacquer for the interior and had about 2700.00 in material costs. Paint has gone thru the roof, remember it's OIL based. It took me 3 months to do all body work paint and sanding buffing, this was NOT a NCRS job. All door jambs were sanded and buffed the underside of the rear hatch, I block sanded the clear with 1000 then 1500 then 2000 grit papers. Definitly an over restore job and charged him 5K plus he bought the materials. Shop around I think you will find 15K guy.

That's way past outrageous. That's stupid! $10,000 to align a body that isn't supposed to be perfectly aligned to begin with?

Ask em how much if they paint it like the factory did. In other words, ask how much to restore it, not customize it.

                  Hey Don,
The bottom line is almost all of the skilled shops concentrate on collision work which keeps thier volume steady. They simply don't have the man hours available for resto work. You are stuck with either someone who will give you questionable results (scratch & shoot, quick trim mask, no guide coat, jamb overspray etc.) or somewone who will forgo 5-10 customers including some onerous DRP (direct repair program) insurance contracts to devote hundredes of hours to your 5 foot paint job.
My buddy had his 2001 jeep repainted. No body work, just south Florida paint fade. $8,500 for a OK OEM finish. The bottom line is even at minimum wage, those long hours ad up. Look at the used corvettes for sale "needing paint". There not selling or selling for cheap because the buyer knows he will have to shell out $20k+ for paint.
Like everything else Don, you get what you pay for.

I think that it is just a little overpriced, but to give you a quality paint job, the car will have to be stripped, the seams reworked to prevent future cracking, some time on alignment. With no panel replacement, nor repair other than the seams, I think that $12k-$15k is a reasonable price.

Just got this out of the paint shop, I posted in other threads but wanted to show a before and after.

Material costs were $3,200 (lacquer) and 136 manhours. This car was completely apart and stripped. The painter did the final body work (It needed more than we thought) and used top quality materials. IE he buys his repair material at paint stores that turn over its inventory so he has FRESH paint, bondo etc.

If you are in the Los Angeles area, give me a call. I have an excellent paint / body shop that will do super quality work. Not cheap, but he wont rip you off either.

Like I said in an early post I just don't get it, my friend did a repaint // lightly sanded the paint because some one keyed my 55 left fender ,It's a two stag job. Yes I removed all the out side parts with no body work having to be done from years of driving it.$2,500.00 . The 55 never never had or needed any body work ,not even any cracks when I striped it for the first paint job .
I live in a small town not the big city and dint have some one with a big name paint it or a restoration shop paint it.
My painter dint spend 1000 hours on it , just a light sanding leaving the original waviness in the body , it was done in two days .
NCRS people that have seen it cant believe what I paid for painting it, Oh will I'm not going to argue with them. And it looks as good as this pic. Today. With out doing any body work 15K to paint a corvette. Beam me up Scotty .
And if any one chooses not to believe me so be it!!

Thanks guys. you really hit it right on. The original 25 k guy came down to 15k and he still will align the drivers door which was the bad one. I told him I did not want everything aligned. He seemed to know more about everything, paint, chrome, convertable top etc. and is proud of his work. His place looks good . he is known around Naples Florida and I have seen his personal car in Naples during Naples shows. The car is super, and so were the ones he was in the process of doing. I hope he is not going to give me a 249$ mako job. He has 7 mos to do the job.

                              Thanks again
