    64 high hp with AC

Anyone know of a way to verify if a car was a 365 hp originally if it no longer has it's original engine. I know it should have a high horsepower tach. Anything else consistent with 365 hp other than the tach?

The car I am referring to has a high HP tach and has Air Conditioning. Engine and AC compressor have been changed. Trying to determine if it was originally a 365 hp AC car.

    Thanks in advance,

    Boyan

Chances are good since they seem to be as much or more prevalent than the lower HP engines.

Long shot, but if it was originally a transistor ignition car, should still have remnants or holes where the amplifier was mounted on rad support. Only L76 and L84 could have had K66 option in '64.

When you say original engine replaced do you mean entirely ? Sometimes they transplant the large harmonic balancer (dated), or keep the intake manifold and carb and/or aircleaner, or oilpan, or retain the exhaust manifolds, which are different for air cars and fuel injection cars (but on opposite side, at least for '65 C60/L76 cars).

Of great help would be a couple of closeup pics so we could analyze.

In my haste (and early morning hours) I neglected to mention the rest of the drivetrain. Base 250hp and L75 (300hp) engines would have had WIDE ratio (2.56) 4-speed transmissions and differential ratios of 3.08 or 3.36.

L76 365hp engines were restricted to CLOSE ratioi 4-speeds (no 3-spd, no automatic) and usually came with differential ratios 3.55 and up (although also possible to have the 3.08 and 3.36 as above).

So if the codes and dates match on these two drivetrain components, and agree with above rules, that's another indicator of an original 365hp.

Anyway, it's much easier to create a L76 than to create an air car.

Adding on to what Wayne said, here's the positraction production table for 1964 from Noland Adams' book. Note the codes AA, DA, EA, FA, GA, and HA are all limited to either L76 or L84 engines while base or L75 cars have different codes.

So, does this 'prove' your car was L76 or L84 if you discover the correct code ID on your rear end? No, it only says THAT rear end originally came from a car that was factory built with a L76/L84 engine....

That's the problem with determining a car's original configuration by 'forensic' methods. It's not proof positive that parts weren't changed by prior owners and some cars were altered after they left the factory.

the A/C compressor pullys differ on the solid lifter vs hyd lifter engines. the Judging manual discusses this issue.mike

Sorry guys, I didnt give enough info. Car is equipped with 4spd, I havent checked what ratio it is. Rear end has been changed to a unit from 1970. The only 365 stuff on the engine is a 6 qt pan. Balancer is not finned, but 8 inch. AC compressor and pulley changed. Exhaust manifolds are 2.5 inch, correct for either 300 or 365 horse.

Also, did not have TI or any evidence of it. One thing caught my eye. It has a chrome fuel line from the pump to the filter just like my 63 340 hp car.

Anyone ever come across a 250 or 300 hp car with a high horse tach?

The car is a mess, photos really wouldnt help unless we come up with something specific.

              Thanks for your input,

              Boyan
