    I dunno; the '65 TIM&JG calls for recessed hex for both lo and hi horse 327's.

    The 396 water pump is different; the originals with the flat back plate had panhead slotted screws with star washers. This pic is of a "284" with cast date E_5_5.

      Just so I'm clear on this, are you talking about the bellhousing lower cover screws or the water pump backing plate screws? For my previous response, I assumed you were talking about the bellhousing lower cover screws.

            Raymond -- Mea Culpa; you initial thread sort of bifurcated, by others, into whether slotted (panhead) fasteners were used on motors in 1965; someone mentioned waterpump backing plates and I jumped in (where maybe I shouldn't have).

            That's one of the drawbacks of this current discussion board format (versus old faithful ) where you could see the change in flavor from the original post, as subsequent posters modified the title to emphasize an additional aspect of the original subject.
