    Distributor caps

I have an unused D-R cap in the original opened square zip box that shows D309R on the box but the black cap only has Delco-Remy Patent Pending R on the top with copper contacts. I have another unused cap which appears to be dark brown that shows Delco-Remy Patent 571594 with copper contacts. What are these two caps applications?

    Thanks,
    Scott

I'm not a C3 guy, but I believe the brown one with copper contacts was for the L-88 application; dunno about the black one with copper contacts.

Thanks. I bought these two several years ago and back in 2003 I sustained a garage and house fire that I thought toasted all my extra Corvette and Impala parts in addition to a '70 Corvette. Today I was rummaging around in another garage I have and found these two caps but could not figure why I bought them or for what. I have owned a '66 Impala SS396 since 1985 and back in 2003 I owned a small block Corvette. I even found an AC compressor and AC unit for IH Scouts.

The D-309R was manufactured with both black and dark brown material. Those manufactured around 1969 when the D-309R was first used for L-88's were dark brown; some of those manufactured later were black.

Your unboxed cap MIGHT be an earlier D-309R. However, it could be a few other caps, too. Compare the cap CAREFULLY to the boxed 309R or another known 309R OR 308R. In particular, note if the position of the window is exactly the same relative to the spring-loaded fasteners. Also note if the overall height of the caps, including towers, is the same. If the unboxed cap checks out as being identical in all respects to a known D-309R or known D-308R, then the unboxed cap is a D-309R. If not, then it's not.
