I am looking for the frame stencil on my May built 61. As I recall it's on the passenger side. My frame is covered with undercoat. Is there a way to clean off the undercoating and not loose the stencil? Is there a reference point on the frame where I can locate the stencil? Jerry

Re: C1 frame stencil cleaning
Jerry, Every frame stencil I've seen on C-1s is on the driver's side of frame. On my 1962, I found it about 12" aft of the front body side mount. If you were sitting in the driver's seat, it would be generally underneath your feet.
Years ago, I went looking for my frame stencil. I took some metal prep that you can get most anywhere. It's clear and about consistency of water. I poured some in a small cup and used a 2" wide paint brush to wet the surface of the frame which, although not necessarily undercoated, had surface rust and dirt build up on the years. After repeating the metal prep with brushing action, the stencil slowly started to show up. For the most part, the black frame paint and the red stencil paint remain in tact and are legible. After getting the stencil clean, I sprayed some clear, no gloss paint over the stencil to preserve what was there. Now that I know the date and frame part number, I could have an exact stencil made and re-painted but for now, I'm content with the way it is.- Top

Re: C1 frame stencil cleaning
Just a bit of additional info on the number location. I did a tracing of the location of the number location with respect to the reference hole and the first character is located 3.25 inches from the center line of the reference hole.- Top
