    Tilt/telescopic parts source

I'm rebuilding a tilt/telescopic column from a '70. There are a few brittle plastic parts that I don't want to re-use and that Paragon does not carry, such as the plastic portion of the universal joint, the plastic piece with teeth that connects to the lock cylinder, the horn contacts, the rubber bumper that absorbs the energy when the column tilts up, etc.

Are these parts still available through GM? Or, is there another vendor that has decent parts? Thanks.

To obtain those small parts for a T&T column your best bet would be Doc Rebuild. He has the best collection of individual parts for sale of any vendor. His websight is sometimes difficult to navigate.

I have purchased parts as well as had rebuilds performed by Corvette Steering.

VERY few parts for Corvette steering columns remain available from GM. I completely concur with Jim Shea as far Dr. Rebuild as a source. Dr. Rebuild has an amazingly good inventory of steering column parts. Of course, I expect that many of these are NOS GM pieces and when they're gone, they're gone.

Patrick's suggestion is a good one, too. Other than Dr. Rebuild, Corvette Steering is about the only other source I know of for steering column parts.

I totally agree about the web site, thats the EXACT reason I like to call them with the current catalog in hand! They do have some parts that are not listed as well.

I recently dealt with Corvette Steering re: my 67. The owner, Tom Reina, seems to have an almost encyclopedia knowledge of steering items, Corvette and otherwise, and he owns a midyear.

Some of the T/T column parts were NOT specific to Corvette and can be 'farmed' from T/T columns used on other GM vehicles from the same era. BUT, you have to know which parts will substitute and which parts won't. That's where the value of a knowledgeable column rebuilder comes into play....

Saginaw was very good at standardizing a lot of their components. For the most part, if the head of the donor steering column looks the same as the column you are trying to rebuild, the guts inside will be the same.

Unfortunately, the aging of the plastic components will probably be similar. (For example: The urethane plastic C-clip retainer on the T&T columns. Every original retainer that I have heard of breaks into small pieces when people try to disassemble the column. (Regardless of the history of the column.) That part is still available through GM dealers and several other sources (GM 7808385).
