    1954 voltage regulator restoration

Anyone have any advice or recommendations on who can restore a 1118827 6 volt voltage regulator?

I have a never installed service replacement 6 volt regulator Delco D603 #1118303 that appears to have similar inner workings and the same or similar resistors on the bottom. Could clean up the base and cap on the original regulator and replace the innards with parts from the D603? The rivits would be tough to duplicate.

    Thanks!

You could pop rivet it ,no one can see them when on the firewall, Look in the yellow pages for a shop that can rebuild it. I did and mine works great. $20.00

John Pirkle in Augusta georgia can restore your voltage regulator.

John Pirkle would be my first (and only) choice to restore it. pirklesr@aol.com

          Danger, Will Robinson!

Each release of a given V-Reg (that includes running changes 'B', 'C', Etc. suffix codes specific to a given PN) had unique internal parts associated with it. That includes the internal solenoids as well as the power resistors.

Take a wire brush and clean the metal end caps on those back side mounted wire wound resistors and you'll see stamped numbers representing their specific resistance value. They're specific to that version of the finished V-Reg assy!

Also, be VERY careful when you clean in this area as these power resistors have a white fiber core (asbestos) that's easy to damage (as well as the thin wire windings of the resistor) IF you accidentally hit them with a rotating wire brush!

I originally posted this 2 years ago and it somehow got ressurected. Still good info, though.
