    C1 Trunk/Deck Lid Hinge Removal/Installation Tips Needed

Me and my body man are strongly considering removing the decklid/trunk hinge assemblies. The bottom of the assemblies are held in by 4 bolts and the tops are held in by 4 rivets. The reason that we want to remove them is to clean and bead blast them. There is alot of old crust consisting of layers of old paint and surface rust. This isn't my first restoration so I know no matter how much time you spend you you can't get these spring assemblies looking really nice and down to the bare metal. Does anyone have any tips for reinstalling the upper rivets? This is all that keeps us from removing these assemblies and restoring them the right way.

You can get a SOFT rivet to reinstall using little pressure using a hand tool . Go to your local airport repair shop. Don't mix your left and right up.

I don't think that we have a local airport repair shop. Is there an airplane parts website with these rivets? The rivets I have are exact to the original and are aluminum, I bought them from Corvette Central but after a little bit of minor experimenting we have found that even these solid aluminum rivets aren't easy to flare, especially in the tight area in which we are working.

There are different aluminum rivets , the head marking determines the hardness, and there are hand tools to use with them in aircraft. Look under airplane rivets.

Justin, check the archives as there's been several good threads about rivets and rivet tools. Here's one of the links http://www.yardstore.com/ You can also use an air hammer with a recessed head for rivets instead of trying to peen them. Redid mine and they cleaned up nice. Good luck, Gary....

Gary, I hate to sound dumb but is there a specific tool under this website that looks like a solution to my problems? I'm just not sure what I'm looking at. Thanks!
