Facing the coil (as you've asked) you pull the coil end tab forward out of the slot and turn counter-clockwise, until it comes to a stop against the stop at 180 degrees (this stop may or may not have a slot in it -- probably not on the earlier style clutches). If you try to turn the coil in the opposite direction, it will encounter high resistance as the coil spring tightens up.
There's an article in RESTORER Vol 17 # 3, Winter 1991, by Henry Motlatch that deals with "fixes" to both the flat plate bi-metallic and the coil.
