    '62 neutral safety switch wiring?

    Hi,
I bought a correct neutral safety switch for my '62 powerglide, there was none on the car.
I've looked at the wiring diagram and see how it interrupts the circuit between the ignition switch and the starter, but where does the wiring from the switch physically run? Should there be a mating pigtail somewhere at the firewall?

    Thanks,

    Paul

If it is anything like a '55, one lead on the switch grounds to the bracket, the other runs to a relay on the firewall. On the relay, one wire runs to the ignition switch battery terminal, another wire from the relay runs to the solenoid. I'm looking at a '61-'62 chassis wiring diagram and see nothing on the neutral safety switch or the relay. Had the same issue with my 'vette and posted questions on wiring. I also made a trip to see Roy Braatz' wiring on his '55. Notes and photos of the wiring were a huge help.

Thanks for the reply Michael. On the '62, the switch has a pigtail with a plug on the end as pictured. I don't know if there should be a mating plug on a lead somewhere in the car (firewall area?), or if it should connect to two individual wires?
I'll trace the wire back from the starter solenoid and see where it takes me...?

On my 62 the neutural safety switch lead comes out of the main harness in the area behind the distributor the lead is about 8 inches long the wire is a shade of violet in color & it plugs right into the safety switch. If I remember right the p/g & standard transmission cars had different main harnesses, the standard transmission cars didn't have this connection was your car always a powerglide?
        Hope this helps you out.

Thanks Mike. I checked, and I don't have any leads coming out of the main harness for the switch. My car has always been a powerglide, but the harness had been replaced many years ago. I'll have to splice in a pair of wires, any chance of a pic showing where in the harness the leads come out?
Also, is there a relay in the circuit? Doesn't show one on the wiring diagram, but I believe the earlier cars used one?

          Thanks,

          Paul

            Paul,
I looked up the harneses for the 62 the main harness is the same, there are 2 different ignition harnesses available one for the standard, one for the automatic, if you get the correct ignition harness your plug for the safety switch will be there, I went through this when I rewired mine.
I'm not sure how to post pictures.
It's up to you but I would get the right harness.
            Hope this helps.

Hi Paul On my PG '62 there are 2 purple wires coming out of loom to right of ballast resister running to left side of car by steering column and plugging into wires going to neutral safety switch. I'll take some pictures tomorrow. No relay to my knowledge. Terry
