    57 FI air cleaner judging.

    In flight judging how many points will be deducted for having the incorrect air filter? Assume that the air cleaner is correct and only the filter is wrong.
    Thanks in advance.

    if i were judging the element and it was a fram/wix etc generic element, i'd take 50% of points allowed for the filter and if it was an AC with the black rubber ends, i'd take 25%. the blue babies get full credit. mike

        Dr. Mike, So without taking the Air cleaner cover off how can you tell if it's a nice wix element or a cheap AC replacement one?
        Meanwhile the Wix element is a tad thicker than the AC Rambler one.
        Also what about the repro you see on ebay once in a while. Heard they come from IN. What's the hit on those?. Last question is if you had a nice black A56C what is the point hit on that one? JD

        One time many years ago I sold a mint blue one for $750.00. Old Ed drove all the way from Cincy to see why I was selling the thing so cheap. I thought I made a killing. Now they are going for 5 grand NOS.

          i always have the owner remove the air cleaner to have a look at the element and the threaded stud that fastens the Air cleaner to the air meter. the black AC delco gets 25% deduct, all non-delco 50%. haven't seen a "repo blue" , at least not knowingly. last original blue i heard of sold for 10K at the Marlboro nationals. i got my first one in cyprus in early 80's and still haven't told the wife i paid 100 bucks for an aircleaner element. the second one was "given" to me by the Dipsitick. i've got original blues on both the 57 vettes and our 57 Pass car FI also has an original blue pass car elenment(which i'm sure you know are a tad longer than the 57 Vette elements).due to their scarcity, its a wonder they haven't been reproduced. regards,mike

            John;
            I have seen some recolored blue filters which I think were made in Ohio. They look strange as I think the color does not look correct.
            The new black filters can't be recolored since they contain silicone which as you know can't be painted.
            Hold onto that case of blue A56C filters you have.

                Roy, please post your photos here rather than using Photobucket. That way the photos are retained in the TDB archives. Using Photobucket or another service the photos get lost. Thanks for your posts. Gary....

                  So if a blue filter is $10,000 what are we looking at per point? 7 points would be 25% so around $1,430 per point? Insane to me! That filter is worth more than my daily driver.

                            Typically one blue element can be used though to judge about 100 cars or so Joel. So that cuts the price per point down considerably don't u think.

                              Good point John (or do you prefer Chef on this board?)

                              So if there were 1040 fuelies in 1957, would there only need to be 10 or 11 of these filters (11 x 100 = 1100)? Probably less since not all fuelers are still around . . . Now I know where you get all those FI units to put on Bel Airs!
