    63 side door mirror

I want to re-chrome my orig door mirror. Although I have a new reproduction mirror, I want to try to restore my orig one.
In order to take the mirror off the holder, where it swivels, I am trying to unscrew the pivot from the base, but it will not budge.
Does anyone know a way to get it unscrewed ? The thead must have locked-up, which is common with old potmetall or alum. parts.

The outside mirror's head is pressed onto the base, it does not screw on. If you do manage to seperate them, the base can be rechromed with good success, but the mirror's head usually has pits near the snap ring groove that make it very difficult to do. Good luck,Bob

Rainer, I feel for you buddy on this project. Here is a neat mirror story. My little white car-the 63 had a typical Paragon repro long base mirror on it. Lost one point with that mirror. So then I spent serious bucks on a NOS long base mirror with came with a date on it that would fly thru judging.. Lost a point on that mirror at a show cause the judge didn't like the way the bevel was around the snap ring. Or he didn't like the bevel on the glass at the edge. That's it. It was the glass that annoyed Jorjorians pal. (heee)
So then I took the car to another show and lost 2 points on the NOS mirror with a thin NOS rubber gasket and correct NOS phillips screw. I normally keep my big mouth shut but I was upset.
So the moral of the story is a decent repro part will sometimes score higher than an original. But knowing you I appreciate the fact you want a nice original car instead of a repro mobile. Good luck, JD
