    #399---------#382----'62

I found it interesting as I go through this '62 about the numbers. The car is ser. no. 399, but on the bellhousing, inside the doors and guage housing I found the number 382.I am sure there are other places, but these come to mind. I realize that there was a build no as to I beleive the number that month that were built. With that thought, were the other 17 before mine built in July? Or were they kind of a "pre" production number?

Job numbers don't necessarily follow VIN numbers (i.e. Job #1 would not necessarily be VIN #1). Did pilot cars, special project cars, etc. get job numbers? Did they also get VIN numbers?

I did get a chuckle. Under the gas tank cover is written for some friend down the line to see "coffee, no cream".

            Ed -

Everything got a Body Shop Job Number - that was the only way the plant could track the unit through the system. As far as I know, every complete car also got a Serial Number, although Engineering frequently added their own internal number on units they ordered and subsequently used for various test and development purposes. "Body Only" jobs (generally only ordered by Engineering) didn't get a Serial Number.

Another location for the J/B # is on the dash next to the inside mirror base. This was also written in green crayon on bare fiberglass and later covered with exterior color-coat paint, glue, and padded dash. This number can be found if you are replacing the padded dash by first cleaning off the old glue around the mirror base area and then carefully scraping the paint with the edge of a quarter to flake the paint off the wax of the underwritten green crayon number. This is the same process you would use to uncover the paint code written on the fiberglass panel behind the passenger seat.

If any reading this would like to add their 1962 Corvette J/B # to my melting pot of information in hope of finding answers somewhere along the way for the hobby on this subject; email me at jgmattson@hotmail.com

This is neat! Take a picture of this writing for documentation in your scrapbook, and leave the writing where it is and as it is. This little personal touch communication from the assembly line gives your car a unique personality and individuality, and it is as it was when it left St. Louis. The car's own originality, a super conversation piece, and quite possibly one of a kind!

                  Here's #483, Job #467 upside down in the trunk. I estimate #483 was built Sep 6, 1961.

It certainly appears as if the same fellow did the writing. The "penmanship" appears to be the work of the same person.

Of course I did leave the note about coffee, undisturbed.
