Early '65 disc brake pad retaining pins (2 clips)

When did the changeover to single clip pin w/nailhead occur ? My early '65 #014xx has the 2-clip design.

My July '65 P&A30 gives the part # 5467815, Gr 5.041, but that is already the 2nd design. Anybody ( Joe L.) have the 1st design # and service replacement date ?

With the nailhead design, does the clip go inboard ? And is the factory clip a "spring" clip or a simple cotter pin ?

BTW, '65 TIM&JG calls for cad, zinc, or cad-dichromate plating on this pin. Guess I've never seen any GM new, 'cause I would'a guessed plain carbon steel.

The "1st design" 1965 brake caliper pad retaining pins were GM #5465970. These were discontinued and replaced by GM #5467815 in May, 1965. My guess would be that the PRODUCTION changeover occurred sometime during the first quarter, 1965.

With the 5467815, the "clip" is a simple, plain steel cotter pin and goes on the INSIDE.

I don't know what finish the 5465970 pins had. However, I've never seen a known-original GM #5467815 that was anything other than natural, plain steel. Most of the aftermarket replacements are zinc plated. It's also possible that later GM SERVICE replacements of the 5467815 were zinc plated (i.e. GM may just have started buying these from the same sources as the aftermarket channels rather than a source that manufactured to their original spec). The GM #5467815 is discontinued.

Actually, the GM pins should have been zinc plated, but, as I say, I don't think any originals were.

If the JG says that these pins were plated, then I think the JG is incorrect.

Thanks Joe -- another source; David Burroughs' book "Corvette Restoration - State of the Art" shows his restored 396 frame with calipers installed, and you can clearly see the plating on the brake pad backing plates, yet not on the pad retention pin (with cotter pin) [see pg. 59]. And I'm sure he did a lot of research on this.
