Window scratches

The rear window in my '71 has some light scratches in it. You can see it and feel them with your fingernail. Any ideas on "polishing" them out?

It's dated glass so no mater what it stays on the car.

Assuming it is a hard top ECKLERS has a kit for glass polishing. Also toothpaste and a lot of elbow grease will work if thet aren't to bad!

Thanks Tom, I did not know about Ecklers's having something. I have heard about the toothpaste, any special flavor?..

Seriously, someone told me not to get too agressive that I might cause the window to shatter; that's my fear.

If the scratches fail the fingernail test you will not be able to remove them without introducing considerable distortion into the glass as well as running the risk of breaking the window through the generation of too much heat. You might do best to leave things as they are.

Thanks Edward, I will go easy with some toothpolish (No Arm&Hammer) if it does not work I will consider it an age spot.

You might try Eastwood as they also sell a scratch removing kit. Good luck. Bill

The fingernail test is a fallacy and it doesn't help that Eastwood has repeated it in their add probably as a CYA move. The real limiting factor is the time you are willing to put into the project.

Yes if the scratch is deep it will take more time to remove especially if one wishes to minimize distortion, but the fingernail test is NOT necessarily the limiting factor.

I posted on the old board about my experience with C3 side glass. I spent about 16 hours each side over several weeks to remove the scratches on the passenger and driver side glass. It is very boring and tedious work, and is best done a little at a time when one is not fatigued. A couple hours a night is all one can take of this kind of labor. Think about the kind of time involved before you decide if it is really worth the points.
